I recognise some of his songs. And on the news it keeps telling me he made a massive contribution to pop and influenced it drastically but it never tells me how or why.
At the moment I am at a loss as to why he was more important than other people in pop and I wish they would explain it better but atm it just sounds like typical media hype. Always referencing his weird behaviour but not the music.
Does anyone here know why he was so influential?.

I'm old enough that I was a kid when he first came out.He did everything Bowie did,but with a Motown throwback edge.His Falsetto wss flawless.He played every instrument and played it well...even recorded his own playing of them all on his albums.He showed a true commitment to excellence...so much so that even though I and all my friends were Slayer fanatics we all respected him.He was so confident in himself that he made it almost impossible to make fun of how effeminate he was(and this was the 80s when that's about all we did). Nothing but respect for Prince.

One of the greatest guitar players ever. Played literally every instrument and provided every male vocal track for most if not all of his studio albums. Cultural icon to Minnesota; leaves behind a huge vaccuum. I never got into his music that much, but TREMENDOUS talent and significance to my state. Plus the best super bowl halftime show ever (which isn't hard, but literally genuinely great show)

Use the Internet and research him, if you are truly interested. More info there than on a video game forum. In my opinion, your research would be worth it. He was amazing.

Nah I'm not that interested. Wikipedia just tells you of him but not why he was so influential or why people felt he was big.

As a teenager in the late 80's he was just a force of nature for a lot of us - even those of us who couldn't stand the title track to Purple Rain. :-) For me, it was a couple of things. First, he was just a technically brilliant musician. Eric Clapton was once asked "what's it like being the greatest guitarist in the world?" - he answered "i don't know - ask Prince." (if you don't know who Eric Clapton is, just Google "Clapton is God") Second, again just for me - he brought a level of creativity and innovation to pop music that always seemed ahead of everyone else. Again - its hard to explain because today we have "instant everything" and access to music and artists at an unprecedented level. Back in the 80's we were still dealing with CD's as "this bitchin' new thing." I can't say that I was a huge Prince fan - I was more about the Cult, the Smiths, and Guns n' Roses; but Prince was just so damn good, man. He wrote some other really iconic songs for other artists too. Do yourself a favor: instead of listening to Purple Rain like most folks, just sit down and listen to the album Around the World in a Day. It still holds up today.

Well put sir. Great lil tidbit about clapton. I was a fan of prince since i was a kid in the 80's and he will be missed by so many. Im happy to see that even though you say he wasnt your type of music, you still have the knowledge and respect for a true icon.

Oh I know who Clapton is but Brian May is the greatest guitarist of all time.
