Getting "upset" may or may not be an over reaction, that's just an opinion. Taking some time to look back on and appreciate a life that inspired so many people is a perfectly fine way of dealing with a passing, whether you ever met the person or not. Same with any other holiday honoring the dead, most of which a majority of participants have never met in person.
