Particles are entangled if their properties cannot be described by the individual particles themselves.
Basically, if I take an electron here, and I change its spin, which causes the spin of an electron across the universe to change, these properties cannot be explained by just one of the electrons, and so they are entangled.

Wow, well done. I didn't expect a correct answer to be honest, getting into deep mechanics like that gets pretty mind wrenching.
