I think what it really is is that they knew people wouldn't care. Casuals wouldn't even realize they were scammed and the dedicated fan boys take the deceit and beg for more. They can get away with anything almost. 140 dollar game plus microtransactions. Your progress is wiped constantly. Completely unfair RNG to extend playtime. Yes, these things may play a role in other MMOs, but they usually do a somewhat better job.
