Despite some minor caveats (some early settlers came to America to deliberately leave British society, mainly over religious freedom issues), it is of course true that Britain founded the colonies that later became the states. Of course, they didn't found the United States, so depending what you mean by "America", there is another quibble. Much of Canada's population comes from U.S. loyalists fleeing the rebellion, BTW.
