I think that the higher skill variant for Destiny relies on strategy and understanding mechanics. Destiny is more geared toward understand how to defeat high level enemies like those in the raid. For me PvP feels more like something that was tacked on to appease more people because having just PvE would only hold half the gaming community.

Strategy and mechanics is a perfect way of putting it. You are really rewarded for understanding how to position yourself tactically in destiny, especially when takin on multiple enemies, or responding when extra enemies enter your space
