Agreed. I remember back when devs actually took the time to create elaborate puzzles with subtle clues about how to obtain things. And they had to because there were no patches being pushed out every week. I'd be okay with a gun only being obtained via overtime work being put in by the truly dedicated, spinmetal hat wearing community members. And technically it's been available since day 1 but it took the community 2 months to crack the code.
