It doesn't matter what it's "true meaning" is.
It matter what it represents now.
If you go around calling yourself "gay," you shouldn't be surprised if people don't think you're referring to yourself being happy, as opposed to your sexual orientation.
"Gay" may have a "true meaning" of being happy, but that's not the common understanding.
The confederate flag may have a "true meaning," but that doesn't matter.
