Light level and overall level confusion
Question: if I change my primary weapon from the messenger (with 170 attack) to hard light (with 160 attack) and my light level decreases from 170 to 168, am I technically weaker in terms of defence now solely due to the primary weapon change? I don't really get this whole defence level, total level, attack level, light level thing going on in destiny atm.

Yes, you're weaker. Your light determines your overall strength and defense as it's an average of all your weapons, armor, class item & ghost.
