They did chop up the story, they had to due to bungie emploees leaving right before launch and Bungie did not want to pay for the rights to the game content said employees created, so they chopped up what they could, removed content to create dlc, then over priced for said content. I'm not saying making a game is easy, but somethings are worth waiting for. Btw the writer and design director left bungie because of unknown reasons. Most say because of activision and bungie pres wanting more money at the cost of content (this is a rumor as I understand). Bungie claimed he left to pursue new creative challenges.
