Optional Matchmaking makes sense just because most higher end content requires communication ie making friends/aquaintances to get past content. VoG being a prime example. I've never heard of a full group of randoms passing Templar. Things like being able to solo a raid because of certain weapons and cheese spots wouldn't be a problem if you could get a group together at the drop of a hat.
