The earliest hint of Destiny was not in ODST as many new people believe, but in a 2008 weekly update where Bungie stated they were working on three new titles at once which we now know to be ODST, Reach, and Destiny.

The only codenames I can recall for Bungie games off the top of my head are 'Monkey Nuts' and 'Blam.' Both of which were Halo: CE. Destiny's codename was originally 'Tiger.' Then it was switched to Destiny, and I think they just liked it enough to keep that codename as the game's name.
