You seem to be forgetting that ya, you didn't need to beat the vog to get ascended materials, but you'd never reach max level either without doing it. Not to mention it took a minimum of 18 ascended materials to upgrade a single piece of gear. It only takes 1 etheric light lol. Be patient, you'll get some eventually!
