Unappreciated Historical Figures!

Here is the thread dedicated to all those dead people out there who you feel should get more attention than they do/did (family included). Here's how we put them on the spotlight: 1)Name/Picture 2)Date of Birth/Death (if unknown guestimate) 3)Why you feel they should be remembered. 4)FUN FACTS! I'll go first; 1)George Williams 2)October 11, 1821 – November 6, 1905 3)This fine gentleman saw the amount of disgraceful actions that young men were committing during Industrial Era London, so he and a group of 11 friends formed the very first YMCA in 1844. Ever since the YMCA (or as it is now known as "the Y") has been a hallmark for community service and reaching out to those in need. NO ITS NOT JUST A GYM. 4)He was actually a very rude mofo in his youth, then later became a devout Christian. Edit: I'm trying to bring attention to those fine gentlemen or woman who are very obscure in the history books. No points are deducted of course for bringing up a past president, but try to show us the people who did something cool, yet are neglected by major curriculums

  • Joseph Lister, 1st Baron Lister, Bt., OM, FRS, PC (5 April 1827 – 10 February 1912), known as Sir Joseph Lister, Bt., between 1883 and 1897, was a British surgeon and a pioneer of antiseptic surgery. By applying Louis Pasteur's advances in microbiology, he promoted the idea of sterile portable ports while working at the Glasgow Royal Infirmary. Lister successfully introduced carbolic acid (now known as phenol) to sterilise surgical instruments and to clean wounds, which led to a reduction in post-operative infections and made surgery safer for patients. His work led Joseph Sawyer to develop Listerine and made halitosis a problem.
