I had the same issue yesterday trying to solo nightfall.
I was sniping from the highest rock and after the first wave, i had to re-engage the door.
Did this like 3 times until 2 other ppl joined my team and we got closer to the enemies which worked fine.

Yep - more dangerous to get close solo but apparently there are other spots I will have to try. At least the strike did lock up on you!
