Happened to me on my second run through.
First wave ended, then noticed it wanted me to kick off the door again. Kicked it off, worked fine the second time.

You got lucky - for some of us on the second run through the enemies just stop spawning and the door won't re-engage so you are stuck. Only option is to head to Orbit and restart the Nightfall.
