When I was playing Counter-Strike 1.6 and Day of Defeat 1.3 - I never used a mic for this very reason, did that for a while in Halo 2 as well though I think it was just a habit by then.
It was only until NFS underground 2 that I started even considering using a mic and I was already 15 by then.
