Everything that's been said equates to an MMO. That makes it *gasp* an MMO.

  • -It's always online -Huge persistent game world -Encounter other players going about their business, whether playing solo or not -The story is there, but it's not shoved down your throat. You can indulge in incidental tasks to your hearts content, not bothering with the main quest. Tasks that are updated by Bungie on the fly - unlike the DLC method in other genres - and will be more numerous and versatile given the nature of the game. -Features 'raids' - the exact term used - which is exactly the same name given to a feature in MMOs. Of course, that one may not entail the same thing, but I'm pretty sure it will involved buddying up and storming an area. The perspective is what's different, as MMOs are all third person stuff - though Destiny will have that covered in the HUB worlds where the distinctions will shrink further. Betting any money Destiny 2 will be an expansion pack, rather than a new game. I'm trying to think how this game is anything besides an MMO.

  • The second was said. There is no solo mode. It's always online, and you're always online. There's no offline experience. You can travel by yourself, but you will encounter other players as you travel through the game world. Challenges in any other game is done through DLC or are there from the off. I'm talking about the kinds unique to the MMO genre. Tasks that are updated seamlessly into the experience, and change the world you're exploring on the fly. Skyrim has a huge world with lots to see and do, but once you've seen all that you need to that's it; unless you get downloadable content that adds a new area and provides a new challenge. With an MMO, the world constantly evolves in subtle and dramatic ways without the use of DLC expansions. Things are just updated and you come back and the world has changed in some way. It's more the method of distribution, rather than the tasks themselves, that I'm getting at. Other games don't have worlds that evolve and change like MMOs, because that's something that is unique to them. RPGs, FPS, RTS, TPS, Platformers... they remain the same as when the game is shipped. Even with DLC, that only adds an additional area. They remain the same. The 'raid' thing I'll give to you, but that's more that it's something that adds onto the other similar features. Something that identifies more with MMOs. I say this because when that word was spotted, people instantly mentioned MMOs. The third person comment is seperate from my reasons why Destiny is an MMO. I'm saying there that it differs from others in the same genre because of the perspective. We've not really had an MMO from the first person... I don't think.
