They mentioned that the new exotic will progress faster than an old exotic. So honestly it's not a huge loss. In a mater of a couple days, you'll have all the perks back and all will be right in the world of destiny. So don't worry so much.
I do wish we could just continue to upgrade without redoing everything but it's not too bad. Could be worse. We could've had to still use ascendant materials AND an exotic shard. So be thankful it's not that lol.

yeah sorry.. Couple of Days is WAY to long for something I've already leveled up. That's a couple of Days I could be doing new stuff and leveling up new gear instead. I don't have all day everyday to play. I have a wife, 2 kids, and a job. 2-3 days is all I have in general... so what you are telling me is... I have to chose, new content, and lose my old stuff... or upgrade my old, and toss aside the new. F THAT!

No, not at all. It's so easy to level up gear. You'll have new bounties from Eris, plus daily bounties and if you so please, crucible bounties. Doing those is not time consuming and you can easily be working on your new gear while you do the bounties and simply switch out one weapon or armor with an exotic you also would like to upgrade and boom, easy peasy. Yes you'll have to sacrifice upgrading a new piece of gear, but you can't get everything at once. Leveling will take time and that's something you'll have to accept, mate. I've laid it out as simply as I could and I don't think it's such a bad system. Especially since when you get your revised exotic, it will have the 300 attack or whatever defense it had when it was fully upgraded, only the perks will have to be obtained again.
