I actually know quite a bit about terrapins.
You'll need to buy iodine soap, and wash your hands each time after handling. Terrapins are known salmonella carriers.
I'll assume the turtle will be in an aquarium? Make sure you have a place for the turtle to get out of the water.

Will only iodine soap work or will other soaps suffice?

As far as soaps, iodine only. It's inexpensive and can be bought at drug stores for a few bucks. I am unsure about hand sanitizers since I try to avoid the stuff. I'm sure a quick search can tell you.
