We bought a pet turtle...

We got it at a flea market. It's a little baby one, about the size of a quarter. I don't know what kind it is, but it's got little red and yellow stripes on its head. The rest of my family are at a pet store to buy it some stuff. I'll try to get some pictures if it. Anyone got advice for me? Oh, and I guess you could ask me questions. UPDATE: Okay, we gave his cage more distilled water for him to swim, replaced the pebbles, gave him some rocks to dry on, and identified his species. It seems he's a red-eared slider. Now we need a name for it... UPDATE: He ate a bit of his food and is basking on his little rock. We're thinking of naming him Leonardo.

  • My sister got two of those at a store at the beach. They sell them as babies, so they're going to get a lot bigger. Also, they're kind of assholes.

    • It's probly a red belly slider. Sounds like the description of it. Make sure when you have it's cage a place for it to swim, but I'm sure your family will know that since they are at the pet store.

        • I had a russian tortoise for a few years, but I got too busy with school and forgot to feed it..And well..it kinda died. I felt bad because they're suppose to outlive humans. But then again it's life was kinda..pointless. No mate, only eating and pooping.

          • Red Ear Slider most likely. Listen very carefully to me on these next points. These things will get big, they will require a big tank, and it will require a ton of time to maintain. It will not stay quarter-sized forever. They are not pets that you pick up and hold. (Many have salmonella and they are aggressive.) You need to have a filter and a special heat lamp for these turtles. You must have a dock of some sort so they can get out of the water to bask. Every week you need to completely empty their tank and scrub it down. This species needs to have deep water, so you can't just put less water in to avoid all the work. If you get tired of this turtle and want to let it go, you better make damn well sure that they are native to the area. Red Ear Sliders are known to be incredibly invasive and can wipe out local turtle populations by outcompeting them. Don't be part of the problem OP. It's not all bad though. Turtles can be interesting pets to look at, and will start to recognize their owners and come to the tank's front around feeding time. Their's a ton of work involved, but it can be really rewarding.

            • I actually know quite a bit about terrapins. You'll need to buy iodine soap, and wash your hands each time after handling. Terrapins are known salmonella carriers. I'll assume the turtle will be in an aquarium? Make sure you have a place for the turtle to get out of the water.
