I use a music streaming service. I support piracy. Art shouldn't be motivated by money.
I use a music streaming service. I support piracy. Art shouldn't be motivated by money.
Tell that to the artists who rely on that money to continue making their art

"The world already has enough 'artists' that play for the sake of money. The world needs more artists that play for the sake of loving to play." - William Parker Jazz Bassist He said this at my Friday master class.
-
Not everyone is pirating music also they can make money from live performances and merchandise and if they really need money the artist can ask fans by putting an autographed piece of memorabilia to auction. If you are talented musician with a good amount of recognition, its not that hard to make money, however you should support smaller artist in anyway you can.
-
Then why do we have "underrated" bands? And yet these crappy pop stars make millions.
-
Because music is subjective and singing about partying and having a good time or drugs and money applies to a broader audience.
-
Oh yeah, true. Art however, must involve money somehow if artists hope to live their life doing what they love. Motivated by money? No. But involve money? yes. Otherwise all these great bands we love would be technicians or engineers, and only do music on the side, if at all.

I 100% agree.

Edited by Prototape: 3/20/2014 5:08:55 PMSo smaller artists should get money from their music, bigger artists shouldn't. Interesting. Albums are for the publishers (or label) for the most part, the artists themselves don't make much from them. The artists do make most of their money from touring and merchandise. If you take album sales out of the picture, then the publishers would lay claim to that money. No matter which way you look at it, money needs to be in the flow in order for them to deliver their art to you. They could play a guitar on the street for spare change, but then you wouldn't be getting that music on your computer. It's funny to me how people expect money for doing their jobs, but turn around and say musicians shouldn't be getting money for doing theirs. I don't care who pirates what, but some of these excuses for it are ridiculous.
-
Exactly. Either way, there is money involved. Even playing on a street corner for spare change, you get spare change.
-
Saying artists don't make much money from album sales is incredibly dubious. It all depends on the label. Many labels treat their artists very handsomely in terms of album sales.
-
Get out of here with your realistic views, this is an internet debate.
-
Well then I will let you continue spitting false arguments behind a monitor. GOOD DAY.
-
I never said bigger artists shouldn't earn money and I am not suggesting that everyone should pirate music. I just think that some people can't afford music which is sad considering it has made such a big impact on our society.
-
That I can agree with, which is where I reiterate that I don't care if they pirate music, I only care if they advertise it as the right thing to do.
-
Yeah, those are the same kind of people that think they shouldn't have to watch ads on YouTube, when those ads are helping support the people who entertain us.
-
Indeed.
