Music sales are not affected by web piracy
A report published by the European Commission Joint Research Committee claims that music web piracy does not harm legitimate sales. The Institute for Prospective Technological Studies examined the online habits of 16,000 Europeans. They also found that freely streamed music provided a small boost to sales figures. The International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI) said the research was "flawed and misleading". "It seems that the majority of the music that is consumed illegally by the individuals in our sample would not have been purchased if illegal downloading websites were not available to them," wrote the researchers in their report, Digital Music Consumption on the Internet: Evidence from Clickstream Data.
So thoughts on the subject? Do you pirate music? I do all the time I am not paying to have a copy of music that I do not own and I don't want to buy an album just to get a few songs. The only music I have payed for is the Halo 3,ODST,Reach and 4 OST's.

    • I pay for music. If I don't pay people for their work how can I expect to be paid for mine?
Music sales are not affected by web piracy [Therefore I should be able to pirate anything I want].
That's not how things work in the real world. Stealing something that is not a necessity needed for survival cannot be justified.

      • Piracy actually helps music. Some artists sell out concerts to places that haven't even bought one of their CD's.

          • I buy albums of bands I REALLY like and want to support. I hope people will buy my music and the music of indie artists legitimately, since we aren't making millions off our music. We need every $5 purchase we can get.

            • I download all of my music. If I really like the albums, I'll buy them. I have almost 20 albums of which I pirated first. The only people that think piracy hurts sales is Metallica.

            • I find this interesting. I have never paid for music nor have I sold it. But I have always had this almost guilty feeling in pirating. But if I couldn't pirate it I wouldn't buy it anyways and it's nice to know I'm not the only one.

                • I donate on Bandcamp when I download songs from there. I probably wouldn't even have very much music on my devices if download sites were not available. I enjoy music, just not enough to pay out the ass for one song on album I enjoy. I think the problem for me is that I don't like many artists, but I do like many individual songs. I'm not really genre loyal either. So, I can buy an album and pay $13 for one or two songs or pay nothing for a single song and support my independent artists through merch and donations.
There is an exception, I have bought four of mc chris' albums. He is my favorite artist ever overall.
• Don't really pay for any of mine, although if pirating wasn't available, I'd probably just use YouTube or other streaming places rather than pay for the music.

                • It is a crime, but the money normally ends up going to musicians that are already rich enough, and considering most musicians do not have any positive impact on society I really don't think they need or deserve your 99c.

                • I never pirate my music but I don't care if other people do, considering I've known these facts since forever. I actually know a lot of small artists who encourage people to pirate their music (or they offer most of their music for free.) The idea is getting your name out there.
