Because that armor doesn't seem to be canon. Its a variant of Mark IV but with shields, which is impossible knowing the fact that the Mark V, which was the first armor with shields, was put out in 2552.

  • How so? Is that when Maria field tested them for the first time?

  • No, 2551 was the year when the MJOLNIR Mark V was issued to spartans / deployed to the battlefield. It's basically the release date of the Mk V.

  • 2251? All Spartan II's received the Mark V prior to the fall of Reach, which was 2552. It may have been in testing before that but Spartans officially got the shield and AI upgrades at Reach.

  • I'm a little rusty with Halo lore right now because of the large break I took when 343 admitted to hiring people who hated Halo. But I used Halopedia.org as my source before I commented and I have yet to see any wrong information on that site.

  • Yes. It apparently says it was issued to Noble Team almost a year before the rest of the Spartan II's. But there is no mention where/why or under what circumstances it was given to them. Not even a source to trace. Halopedia is notorious for filling in gaps as they see fit with no sources.

  • Well I guess it depends on what version of the lore we're going off of since Bungie decided it was a good idea to retcon established lore. But I always thought Halo Nation was the site that did that, not Halopedia.

The shields were only present during gameplay. It has been stated that they have shields for gameplay reasons.

  • They never get hit in the cut scenes so we don't know if they do have apart from gameplay. And I know shields are there for gameplay mostly, but still.

The armour is definitely canon though. It's just one of the many variations of the MKIV, just like how there are multiple MKV variations, and multiple MKVI variations.

  • No. Having shields classifies it as a Mark V. This isn't just some variant as it were for EOD or EVA. Mark IV as a whole was not able to support the increased demand the energy shield needed which is why the whole armor was redesigned.

  • I know MKIV didn't have shields. It has been specifically stated that the shield are there for gameplay reasons, just because they don't take damage in the cutscenes doesn't mean that they have shields outside of gameplay. Frankie has confirmed that it's canon armour.
