Nothing personal, but I have a very hard time taking you seriously. Which is a problem you made for yourself by bombarding the forums with your alts and frequent shitposts. That aside, you've toned down enough for me to be okay with seeing your posts for now.
But let's not make this about you. If you're actually being serious, then here we go:
Threads like the one you posted are an eyesore to me, no matter who they're about. There's no need to call out other members, even if that member is an obvious troll/alt, making a thread about them just escalates the situation. As for Sparkles, I can't comment because I don't know the story, but either way I'm not okay with threats even if they're an obvious joke. That kind of behavior shouldn't take place here, and honestly this is the first website I've been a part of where I've seen those kinds of remarks aside from smaller/closer communities where it's on more common ground. Even then, they weren't really threats as much as they were insults.
We are the community, but this is Bungie's website. They may listen to us to an extent - but on the flip-side - part of the purpose of this forum at all is to have a home for people interested in their games. That's what the community is primarily about, it isn't a hub for internet drama. This is why the rules exist, and why they need to continue to exist to keep this place relatively friendly for new members. I'm all in favor of keeping the report system in, and the current moderation system in as well (with some improvements down the line). There's plenty of websites out there void of rules and moderation for the most part, if that's what you're interested in I can't imagine why you're still here other than maybe having a few friends here.
Web-team, you guys are about to repeat history. It's not too late to change your minds and really make this site perfect. Removing the report system and bans entirely (Other than for illegal activity, legitimate personal threats etc.) and make this community handle its own problems. Or, if you want to stick with the known system that has failed before, then give everyone else that has made threats bans. (About 80% of this forum)
I'll close on this:
We were given a lot more freedom here than I would have imagined when they updated the website, and just take a look at what's come from that. I seriously doubt that they'll give is more elbow room unless their goal is to destroy what's left of this community. I have a rule where I don't act any different on the internet than I do in real life, this gets me by without getting banned, being in the middle of some pointless fight, etc. If anything I'm a bit more careful online because tone and body language are eliminated. Some people don't understand this, and I wouldn't want to be here if they were suddenly given more freedom, that would be way too much noise for me.

I'm apathetic to how others perceive me. My alts are irrelevant here. That isn't in any way a "problem." Also, I've never posted about fecal matter. I haven't needed to "tone down" either. I am almost always serious. If such threads are an eyesore then don't read them. Also, no one is being "called out" here. I see people here make joking threats all the time, usually it's something ridiculous which isn't made a big deal, Sparkles' thread was different for some reason to which I am still unsure. I am merely attempting to help Bungie improve their website. And I think gaming discussion should be in the gaming forum, and any "drama" be directed in the off-topic forum so those that don't want to see it don't have to. Report systems sound nice but are extremely easy to avoid and promote rude behavior, as we saw on the old site. Sure, people are a little more nasty now but there's so much more freedom and expression, and I can handle myself if someone becomes an irritant by simply ignoring their posts altogether or muting them. The bans have never and will never work, so why make this site worse again?
I see people here make joking threats all the time
If it's something like "fite me irl", then I'd feel more inclined to be on your side on that. If it's a bit more extreme, even if it's a joke, it's generally not acceptable on most places like this.
Also, no one is being "called out" here.
I was referring to the post you linked us to, not the one you just made. I might not have been entirely clear on that.
And I think gaming discussion should be in the gaming forum, and any "drama" be directed in the off-topic forum so those that don't want to see it don't have to.
This is a forum that is primarily game-centric. Bungie is a game developer, we have all played at least one of their games or are anticipating to with Destiny coming out. I realize the necessity of off-topic, but in no way does it mean off-topic should be the dumpster for everyone's problems/angst. A little drama, sure, why not. Big drama, which is what usually happens here, is not necessary. Again, this is a recent hallmark of this website that I haven't encountered anywhere else. It's not a huge problem for me personally since I can just hide it, but again, it doesn't make it okay to act like that.
Sure, people are a little more nasty now but there's so much more freedom and expression, and I can handle myself if someone becomes an irritant by simply ignoring their posts altogether or muting them
Which as a whole I'm okay with in principle. Nothing's ever really effected me directly because I've never been a target here, because I don't make myself one. On the other hand, some of the stuff that happens here is an over-all eyesore, and commonly thwarts discussion pertaining to why we're even here in the first place.
The bans have never and will never work, so why make this site worse again?
That I can kind of agree with actually. Anyone who's banned can easily make a new account and post from that, which is what everyone's doing. Some people cut it close by making it very obvious who they are, and they usually get a way with it. If I know who's evading a ban, I mute their alt, at which point - again - it's not a big problem for me. As much of a problem it is, I'm not really on-board with IP banning anyone either, so it's kind of a dead end issue. I wouldn't know what to do about that, and I won't pretend to. Either way, we'll find out what's next for us early next year. From there we can talk about website improvements a bit more. I suppose my overall point is this is more of a home to gaming (primarily Bungie games) and the community that follows it rather than a clubhouse for what usually goes on here. I'm more in favor of enforcing that than anything else. But that's just me. I tend to be more even and to the point, which is why I don't take part in a lot of what goes on here. I recognize that's not how everyone else is, so I can't say my idea is what's best for the website. But as a whole, inviting more mess into the website is counter-productive and not why this forum exists. Obviously something could be done a little differently here, but I think we're still in the transition of having that being figured out.
I was referring to the post you linked us to, not the one you just made. I might not have been entirely clear on that.
Just wanted to clarify the thread is a user who blatantly called me disabled in their title. If they call me out (Which I'm completely fine with) then better be able to take it as well.

Edited by Prototape: 12/30/2013 1:49:16 PM
then better be able to take it as well.
This is another time where I agree with you, with a catch. On one hand, life is full of people making rude remarks to each other, and being able to just ignore it is a good skill to have. But not everyone does have it, or at least they can't apply that skill online for some reason. On top of that, I'll reiterate that this is Bungie's home-page, and they have to keep a bottleneck on stuff like that to keep the website appealing to newcomers. If that bottleneck were gone, we'd only attract people who were intent on keeping that kind of stuff going. It's expression in one way yes, and I realize that's important, but being that rude all the time is not really okay by most people's standards. I definitely don't come here in my free time to deal with more of that. I really don't care about banter, or occasional drama. I don't jump into every issue and tell everyone to calm down because I realize it's just something that happens on the internet sometimes, and it's not my problem for the most part when I can just hide it. It's the frequency/severity that I don't feel is necessary. I don't come here looking forward to see what kind of situation I can attempt to diffuse next, but when these situations get in the way of why I'm here in the first place, I feel inclined to care more. Either way I don't like seeing other people being the center of some shitstorm, but it's not something I can always help, which is why I'm okay with the current system despite some of its faults. The moderators handle it sometimes, other times things apparently fall through the cracks, or there's a quirk in the system, or who knows. We're at somewhat of a disadvantage not being members of the web team/moderation team in that we don't always know what's being enforced consistently, what's being noticed, or if people are even reporting things at all. I've noticed Ninjas saying a few times that their report queue is empty too often. On that note, you're kind of getting what you want for the most part despite the system still being there. I'm straying/rambling on, but in the end things are apparently going to change again (either in a minor way or a major way), so we'll just have to wait and see what else is in store for us.
