Besides the post I am basing this thread on, (Which you can see be clicking the "View Original Post" link at the top of this thread)
Of course context is important, but this is the internet - its very nature makes us lose some context. And quite frankly, saying it is okay to call someone a "fag" because you're joking around is BS. That's exactly the same thing as saying it is okay to call someone the n-word because you're just joking, or saying it is okay to use the term -blam!- when talking about beating someone in a game rather than forcing someone into a sexual act. Context is important, but that context mostly should dictate the consequence to the user who posted it, not necessarily if content should be removed or not.
I don't care that "everybody" does it. You should be better than that. You diminish yourself every time you such slurs, even in jest.
I challenge you to be better.
we have this quote from Achronos in the same sub-thread, "Unfortunately, we cannot see everything, and that's why we have reports to supplement the usual moderator powers (which they still have)."
So, surely, the reports must work and People will get those well-deserved bans! HOORAY! Right?
NO! If you do this again you're going to go right back to the way the old site is and give even more people reason to purposefully seek out bans, easily avoid them and do it again for even bigger self-hilarity and people view it as some kind of achievement. We're going to have what we have now and make the other useful systems useless, and get people banned mistakenly, again. This site was seriously almost perfect. When the new site and the relaxed rules cam it made the site so much better. We had better discussions than the old site could have never had. What's my point with this thread? Well, let's discuss that last part right now.
Look at the link bar now. That was a reported thread insinuating I am retarded. Attached to it has been a semi-popular thread days old no ninja could have possibly missed blatantly calling me disabled. So, Sparkles gets a ban over a joke about harming someone, something 80% of this forum has done without bans or outcry like his thread got, but two threads with offensive content, one of which was reported over a day ago, are left unchanged.
Am I upset at these threads? Do I think those obvious morons should be banned? Hell no. I don't give a rat's behind what they say. I didn't even report either thread and one still got reported. I even went in both and had fun proving them wrong. If I was so bothered, guess what? I'd mute them. Instead, I've chosen not to let strangers control my emotions. I have too much character to let some kids bother me, and I would NOT ask either of them be banned. I don't even ask for their threads to be hidden. I want Sparkles to have been left alone for his obvious joke.
Web-team, you guys are about to repeat history. It's not too late to change your minds and really make this site perfect. Removing the report system and bans entirely (Other than for illegal activity, legitimate personal threats etc.) and make this community handle its own problems. Or, if you want to stick with the known system that has failed before, then give everyone else that has made threats bans. (About 80% of this forum)
Just my thoughts. We'll see what happens. PEACE!
(I had to change some things around and the edits were getting glitchy, I realized one of those threads the user was banned, still irrelevant to my main points here)

1 ReplySad how you spent all that time typing the OP to just waste it by posting that pretty gif and get (perma)banned. Ah well, no real loss.

5 RepliesEdited by Prototape: 12/30/2013 12:40:20 PMNothing personal, but I have a very hard time taking you seriously. Which is a problem you made for yourself by bombarding the forums with your alts and frequent shitposts. That aside, you've toned down enough for me to be okay with seeing your posts for now. But let's not make this about you. If you're actually being serious, then here we go: Threads like the one you posted are an eyesore to me, no matter who they're about. There's no need to call out other members, even if that member is an obvious troll/alt, making a thread about them just escalates the situation. As for Sparkles, I can't comment because I don't know the story, but either way I'm not okay with threats even if they're an obvious joke. That kind of behavior shouldn't take place here, and honestly this is the first website I've been a part of where I've seen those kinds of remarks aside from smaller/closer communities where it's on more common ground. Even then, they weren't really threats as much as they were insults. We are the community, but this is Bungie's website. They may listen to us to an extent - but on the flip-side - part of the purpose of this forum at all is to have a home for people interested in their games. That's what the community is primarily about, it isn't a hub for internet drama. This is why the rules exist, and why they need to continue to exist to keep this place relatively friendly for new members. I'm all in favor of keeping the report system in, and the current moderation system in as well (with some improvements down the line). There's plenty of websites out there void of rules and moderation for the most part, if that's what you're interested in I can't imagine why you're still here other than maybe having a few friends here. (About 80% of this forum)
I'll close on this: We were given a lot more freedom here than I would have imagined when they updated the website, and just take a look at what's come from that. I seriously doubt that they'll give is more elbow room unless their goal is to destroy what's left of this community. I have a rule where I don't act any different on the internet than I do in real life, this gets me by without getting banned, being in the middle of some pointless fight, etc. If anything I'm a bit more careful online because tone and body language are eliminated. Some people don't understand this, and I wouldn't want to be here if they were suddenly given more freedom, that would be way too much noise for me.
