I think the increased influence of parental lobby groups and the like has sanitised cartoons a bit, to the point where a lot of them lack the individuality and unique voice that older cartoons sometimes had just because they were allowed to get away with more. The same goes for a lot of children's programming - even Sesame Street, in some ways the quintessential morning children's programme, has been softened a lot in recent years. I doubt you'd see episodes these days dealing with death and mental illness like some of the older eps did.

  • In many ways the parental lobbies in the 90s made the Batman cartoons better, not worse. It meant that there was no serious violence, only implied violence and horror - which done right is often worse.

  • You'd be very surprised at the stuff in cartoons shows these days actually, I think they've gotten worse.

  • Which shows are you thinking of?

  • Not young children's programming. I grew up with Ahhh! Real Monsters, Rocko's Modern Life, etc. when I was preschool aged. The stuff on Nick Jr and Disney these days for kids in that age bracket is definitely much more sanitised.

  • Well those shows were pretty crude and I don't think they were meant for your age group. You should see the stuff on Cartoon Network, cartoons range from mature to disturbing.

  • Ehhh, they were a little crude, but they weren't really dark - just silly slapstick that sometimes verged on being gory. Shows like CatDog and Angry Beavers were aimed at the same age group (which, yes, was probably older than little four-year-old me, but whatever) and weren't as gory but probably had more adult jokes. There was also Bump in the Night, which was fab. :D

  • Once again, GRAVITY FALLS. There are guns, murder, and genuine peril in that show.

  • This seems very true. Just the other day I was watching the Power Puff Girls on CN Canada and a bank robber pulled a gun out and sprayed them with a storm of lead! Man that surprised me simply because I would no longer ever expect such a thing in a modern show :P

  • Power Puff girls is pretty old, though. :P And Sesame Street legit had episodes about people dying, depression and other mental illnesses, how to deal with your home being destroyed during a natural disaster like a hurricane, all kinds of really deep shit. Plenty of kids back in the day learned what death really meant from the Sesame Street episode about Mr Hooper's funeral (which they made after the actor playing him passed away).

  • Wow I did not know that. I never did watch Sesame Street as a kid, I thought big bird was scary XD

  • Old school Sesame Street was seriously high quality children's programming. It's worth going back and watching old stuff on YouTube or their official site.
