Have Cartoons Actually Declined In Quality?

It's a common characteristic of the internet to find people complaining of how great cartoons used to be, and how terrible they are now. But is this true? Are we blinded by nostalgia, or have cartoons actually gotten worse since we were younger?

  • Adventure Time, Regular Show, and avatar are some recent shows that I'd still sit down for and watch a full episode.

      • I think Cartoons don't really teach lessons like old Cartoons use to, nor are they as deep story wise, nor are they as funny. Nothing today beats Ed, Edd, and Eddy. They won't even allow cartoons like DBZ or Gundam Wing on TV anymore, or anything like the old Toonami days for that matter. I can honestly say I'm not looking through nostalgia goggles here because I still watch these shows, and they're still amazing to this day.

          • Well, it seems like a lot of them has been "dumbed" down, but after watching older Pokemon episodes a few years back, they're not exactly as "deep" and "mature" as I remembered them.

              • Bit of both. Modern cartoons are pretty bad. I miss the days of Batman: The Animated Series and Batman of the Future. Gravity Falls is alright, need to watch more of it. Never seen Adventure Time though I've heard good things.

              • I think the increased influence of parental lobby groups and the like has sanitised cartoons a bit, to the point where a lot of them lack the individuality and unique voice that older cartoons sometimes had just because they were allowed to get away with more. The same goes for a lot of children's programming - even Sesame Street, in some ways the quintessential morning children's programme, has been softened a lot in recent years. I doubt you'd see episodes these days dealing with death and mental illness like some of the older eps did.

                  • No, not really. A lot of it was nostalgia, and that's why we love the 90's cartoons so much. But in terms of quality, I do think that cartoons began to decline during the 2008-2009 era. But now there are cartoons that I love, my favorite being The Amazing World of Gumball.

                  • Cartoons I loved as a kid. Teen Titans Billy and Mandy Naruto (not really a cartoon, but still) Courage the Cowardly Dog (my childhood fav) Dexter's Lab Camp Lazlo Spongebob (older stuff, the new stuff doesn't appeal to me the way it used to)

                    • Most of what you will see today aren't anywhere nearly as good as past cartoons, but there are a few great ones now. Gravity Falls being one of them.

                    • Futurama and American Dad! both felt like they declined during their fifth seasons (Futurama's "season 5" is technically "season 6", I think). I couldn't put my finger on it, but they just weren't as good as before. A lot of the humour kind of went away, too and was replaced by stuff that felt like they were trying to be just 'edgy'. Though, by Season 6 or 7, both seemed to have picked themselves back up.

                      • No, we are simply looking at our childhood favorites with an degree of nostalgia and looking at modern day cartoons as adults, and we do not enjoy them.
