When Marathon fails then Bungie is going to fold, you know that right? There will be loads of lay offs and Sony will absorb the talent into their studios and get rid of the rest. There will likely be less of a team then there already is for Destiny and it will be bled dry until the playerbase doesn’t sustain eververse profits.

Unlikely. 1. That move would damage investor confidence. Sony paid $3.6 billion for the studio and its ip’s. 2. The Bungie name still has value. It is just an asset that has been mismanaged. 3. It’s ip’s still have value. Just look at the passion with which Destiny players tore into Marathon…and have been calling for D3. 4. What’s wrong with Bungie as a studio is a straight forward fix: It needs competent leadership. The problems that have been plaguing Bungie these last few years are what you get when an organization is poorly led and managed. When there is a “Rot at the Top”. Rather that shuttering Bungie like EA does, Sony just needs to step in and clean house at Bungie. Sony has a LONG track record of managing its SIE studios well and making great games (Concord was a fluke and how quickly the plug got pulled on it shows how little tolerance Sony has for that kind of thing.) Also Sony has deep pockets and can afford to let Bungie run at a loss while it rehabs Bungie as a company. 5. Microsoft and XBOX. MS bought up a crap ton of studios, and it is still not clear what they are going to with them. If they start widely resorting to exclusive and timed exclusive games? PlayStation could take a big hit. Which means Sony can’t afford to throw away studios that still have value.

Investor confidence ?? You know it’s privately owned right??? I switched off after I read that. Bungie does still have value as a brand and Destiny as well but know one knows how that will transpire when Sony has full control.

Edited by TheArtist: 5/23/2025 1:47:26 PMBungie is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Sony, that is allowed to operate (somewhat) independently under the Sony umbrella. Sony is a publicly-owned and traded company that is listed on both the Tokyo and New York Stock Exchanges. Given that Sony bought Bungie for $3.6 billion—-a price that many analysts at the time considered to be over-paying? A triple-A game that flops from a subsidiary that many considered a questionable acquisition at the time…after the unprecedentedly rapid shelving of Concord? Will absolutely shake SONY investor confidence. Sony needs to demonstrate that the Bungie acquisition brings value to its shareholders. Which is why…imo…Bungie’s leadership needs to go. They are becoming an embarrassment to Sony…and a thorn in their side with investors….and Sony’s in-house counsel.

Ain’t no one investing in Bungie brother.

Let me explain this once again: 1. Sony owns Bungie. It is part of Sony Interactive Entertainment. Sony just lets Bungie keep its name and operate somewhat independently. Which is why during the last round of Bungie layoffs, Sony took 150 Bungie employees and MOVED them to other parts of Sony. 2. People invest in Sony. 3. The money that Bungie is hemorrhaging right now is coming out of SONY profits. So Sony investors have a huge stake in what’s going on inside of Bungie. Which is why it is almost guaranteed at this point that Sony steps in and replaces the current leadership at Bungie. Sony and their investors are not going to put up with this.

They can shutter Bungie but Destiny will live on.
-
Short term yes and I also hope for the long term but let’s see…
-
If Sony shut bungie down I feel they would just shut the servers of fully and shelve the ip indefinitely. Can't really blame them considering how their live service plans went.

Too much money on the table. Both as a video game and TV/Movies. Look at how The Last Of Us is doing….and think of what a Destiny TV series could do. IMO, that is why Sony paid $3.6 billion. Not just for the “live service expertise”. But to gain control of Bungie’s IPs as well. Because Sony has the resources and the expertise to turn them into multimedia powerhouses. Especially after having worked with Marvel (Disney) on the Spider-man movies.

They probably won't shelve the IP, they'll just lease it to NetEase (who frankly look like they're doing a pretty good job with it so far)
