Have you checked to see whether you are worthy?? I was pretty sure I effed up the Founts rune, but I was still worthy when I checked. I did not get a knife from the Founts rune chest as I didn't realise I had to do both rune secrets... 100% did not drop as, by this point, I was checking drops. But as we now spawn in hull breach I thought I'd double check... and I was all good. The thing is, I had the quests completed and did the cabal barrier secret before I had any concept of what this catalyst involved... I did not notice any knife drops as I wasn't reviewing any drops; I just check my inventory. However, I must have got 3 already somehow... so definitely worth checking to avoid unnecessary steps!! It is a rubbish quest, and more focused towards players helping each other out I think, but even still this could have been made more accessible... either keep the rng and have dedicated steps and progress, or, keep it a secret and remove rng completely.
