The OP is 100% correct.
D1 was only a 3-year game vs D2 which is still struggling 6 years later that the business has to do a second overhaul.
When it comes to a game structure
How a loot system was designed
Incentive
Consistency
Moving a game forward
Improving the player experience
Making improvements for a game
D1 Bungie the actual developer did better work than this Business has done in 6 years with D2.

D1 was a game, D2 is a service. D2 is also really held back because bungie are making 3-6 other games, most of which take priority over Destiny. It's a business, I totally get it, but huge potential & making the game one of the greatest of all time, is being wasted. D1 is better given how little D2 has progressed over the 6 years, but D2 could have been soooooo much more.

The only people they are servicing at this point are their investors. The players have been told to pound sand.
D1 was a game, D2 is a service.
What's interesting is that D2 wasn't a service game, and still was in bad shape until Activision stepped in with Forsaken providing the studios the game needed. The only time in 6 years this game before that and after was in a good place. That alone says a hell of a lot. D1 moved forward the entire time and it was consistent the entire time. Now, this business wants to set players back a second time in 6 years with LF. The fans "D3" that they have been wishing for.

I'm convinced the base D2 build was cut from original D1 build. There was footage from alpha shows & other reveals showing things that didn't appear until D2, like a vex bosses, the D2 mars warnind patrol area. It was pretty much confirmed that garden of salvation was cut from vault of glass, even Luke Smith said vog was much bigger but they cut it bcoz it was too big for consoles first raid. There where still a good few bugs in base D2 that had been patched over the years from the D1 version, deffo used the same code. For me, D2 was built as D2 from Forsaken & high moon/vv did a lot of that. Since then we've seen how bungie struggle to make anything new. Base D2 was D1 year 4 I also believe D3 was part way built before the split, the 4 planets being Europa, Throne World, neonuma & whatevers next. One of the reasons for the split I believe was Activision wanted games, bungie wanted expansions. Doing it this way, it gives them 170 for what would have been 60 had it been d3, also frees up staff for 4 years to do the new games. Not judging, it is what it is

D1 is amazing...now. There were several incredibly bad content droughts in D1 where things were rough.
-
I won't disagree on that, but I'm not looking at the lack of things, I'm looking at the quality, the effort, etc.. put into the game. it is a complete game vs D2. It use to be "more is better" with D2 launched, at least that was Luke Smith's logic with D2 base game which was false knowing how low the quality of the work being done was, the lack of effort, lack of incentive, etc.... that was put into D2. Now it's pay more for less and somehow fans have convinced themselves that that "is better". Quality will always win over quantity. It doesn't matter how much content is added to a game. If the quality of any game is low, you will not keep a players interest in any product. That is common knowledge that this business majorly lacks.
-
There's even worse content droughts in D2 if you just play the story. 5-10 mins per week for 51 weeks of the year. Lol
-
You didn't even had a story in D1
-
D1 Had a story just not a good way of portraying it, you had to read and play at the same time to follow it. But D2 does have a better way to have players comprehend the story and seeing each story I have to say the best story is honestly The Red War and Then Taken King followed by Forsaken. The seasons have stories which makes the world feel alive but the pace for the story is very slow and based off repetitive activities which in my opinion makes the game feel mundane. I don’t know how it could be fixed while still keeping player retention but this is all just my opinion.
-
Taken king was the best story they've told.
-
For like couple of hours, there was no story content outside story missions in DLC's, which is like couple of hours per year. Literally any D2 story beats any D1 story except Taken King, and even that is debatable
-
You can add all 4 seasons story together & it's about an hour, I ran WQ last week in about 2hrs30. If I had to choose a game id choose D2 now, I'm saying give D2 the D1 treatment regarding budget & staff & D2 is 500 times better than it is now. Taken king had more effect bcoz the game was dying, WQ is just more destiny that we've known for 4-5 years. D1 had 800 staff & took 7 years to create. D2 after Forsaken has a very small team. They're making 3-6 new games & they've only added about 200 staff, all the big Devs have moved to the new games for the last few years, theyre usng destiny to fund everything & are doing the bare minimum. D1 expansions had 8-10 PvP maps, 8-10 strikes, full vendor refreshes, 15+ exotics. Now we get 1 map, 1-2 strikes, we don't even get nightfall loot, these are caused by no budget or staff, it's a choice by bungie to minimum product us. My point is D2 is great, but it could & should, be so much better.
