Bad apple effect at work. It's a handy evolutionary trait built into humans. We've evolved to to focus less on what won't hurt us, and more on the active threat at hand that can.
If early man was too pre-occupied enjoying the flowers in the fields around him and taking it easy he might not have noticed the predator stalking him in the fields. So, in modern times today all we see are the shitty people. That's why the news focuses on the negative aspects of the world.
In reality, there's probably decent people all over the place. But they're not an active threat or source of woes, and they don't put themselves in the spotlight or on the radar. They do their thing in relative silence.
It's hard to acknowledge that decent people exist when you don't see 99% of them.
