Just took stats last semester. I hated it. Seeing this reminds me of it.

21 chances instead for 12 is a 75% increase. 12 = 3 VoG chest + 3 Atheon + 3 Deathsinger + 3 Crota 21 = 6 VoG chest + 6 Atheon + 3 Deathsinger + 6 Crota

You have double the chance of exotics from atheon and crota if you just do hard first. I've gotten a vex mythoclast and Suros regime at the same time from atheon doing it just on hard. You don't increase your chances by doing normal runs first, though, unfortunately. It's 21 either way with 3 characters.

The VoG chest can be opened on normal and then on hard. You can refer to the video the OP posted under edit 1 : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hV5XbhQ3KCU . The vex drops from a different exotic chance than the exotic drop. This is true of the Crux of Crota as well. That is why every double exotic drop that you will find includes one of those two. However, if you do normal and then hard you get two exotic chances as well as the chance at a Vex/Crux.
