U have to do left trigger as the attack is landing. Its tricky. U can also guard break which is forward and ligh attack in unison. This opens the opponent up for a scripted crictical hit.

The left trigger. A good trick I picked up was to watch the enemies hand rather than their weapon. It's improved my parries ...a little lol
