Why is everyone so concerned about story?

According to what I have seen so far everyone freaks out over the fact that destiny doesn't have a strong story element and we are forgetting all about the gameplay, which is excellent, fast paced, and smooth, but nobody cares anymore whether a game is fun to play or not, we just want some amazing story like "The Last of Us" had, and I think this is why so many people incessantly complain about destiny not having enough narrative.

because heaven forbid the 10% of people that buy games just for story aren't satisfied!!! It's not like they had the ability to know this game was going to be mmo-ish and not a traditional RPG. nooooo that was too much work to look into but yet they come here to give an opinion on something they bough for the wrong reasons. kinda like buying skyrim and complaining that it doesn't have a turn based combat system like final fantasy.

Because I've seen their work when they were in their prime. Yes, Halo's story was light and left some questions that could only be answered through other sources, but each one had a solid campaign that had a reasonable beginning, middle and end that satisfied you. Even Mass Effect 3 with it's dismal plot hole filled story line left me with fewer questions and made me feel better about completing it than this game. When you have your customers finish the last mission of a game and go "That's it? That's -blam!-ing it?!" while looking for more campaign missions, you know you screwed the pooch with story telling.

      • Because "everyone" expected a lot more out of the worlds most expensive piece of entertainment. What next? Movies with no story? Or how about a novel with no story or point? Kinda like this post. Usless ranting about. . . Wait a minute this lame ass post has more story then Destiny.

      • I wouldn't say I worry about story but I can see that Destiny's lore can have a great story around it so I would just like to see one. Its already got some nice gameplay down.

      • Well the gameplay is good but why the -blam!- am I doing what I'm doing. There is no explanation of ANYTHING. It doesn't need to be the last of us (btw no one said that) but I shouldn't constantly wonder why I'm running around for someone who I have never actually spoken to or just doing strikes / raid which have very little context in relation to the rest of the game.

      • Its because we're long passed the days of mario. Video games are full fledged entertainment media. If i wanted purely gameplay i would play plants vs zombies garden ops.

      • Gameplay is great, but at some point the payoff needs to come through in a story that I care about. Otherwise, gameplay gets old and I'll move on.

      • Why would you ever want to play a game, or enjoy one more over, that does not have a story to tell, interesting characters that you like, and a purpose. Shooters are pretty lame for the most part without a decent plotline/ reason for the constant gunfire. The more character a game has the more you'd be willing to replay it. I mean Tales of Symphonia is 11 years old, has 80+ hours of core content and a fantastic storyline and some awesome characters I always love to play through. I'd rate is as better in terms of mechanics, plot, hell art design than most other games developed in the last 10 years.

        • Funny you mentioned tlou because along with that nice story and pretty graphics it had very boring repetitive gameplay (mgs poops all over it's "stealth") and a tacked on last minute multiplayer, that while I enjoyed for awhile was ultimately ruined with their ridiculous welfare system to create false team balance. Destiny on the other hand has excellent fun gameplay and a more competitive multiplayer setup tho as of now lacks in story. But judging from the grimoire cards, I believe this will change as they add more in.

        • Because they probably don't like the pvp. The story did seem to end fast and not shed much light (pun intended) on the bulk of what's actually happening.

          • Everybody wants an engaging story you don't just want a boring shooting gallery like the missions are. In this universe you need to explain certain things to your fans, if you don't create engaging stories and missions why bother?

          • I was let down because i was expecting some huge epic halo type story, but instead we got a scattered mess with virtually no plot line. Plus you shouldn't have to buy the expantions to figure out the story.

            • Idk some people play games for the story. I personally don't care too much for it but I guess they promised a massive story but then activision cut a lot of it to be sold as DLC

I greatly appreciate a good narrative, especially if it's paired with decent gameplay. I didn't find Destiny's story to be compelling and there's quite a bit of lore located in the grimoire rather than actually in the game. I don't find myself actively involved in the whole light vs. darkness battle.

              • Not sure if anyone posted this response, but there's a lot of comments to go through. A big reason people play games that are as expansive as destiny is supposed to be is because of the lore. A lot of people enjoy spending their time pouring through the various books or information terminals found in large scale gaming experiences because they want to know as much as possible about the world they're exploring. They want an explanation for why things are the way they are in the game world. I myself enjoy that aspect very much. Take the fallout games for example. I spent many of my 450+ hours on fallout 3 just going through all the conversation trees learning about the backgrounds of different npc's, and reading everything i could on the terminals i found in the buildings scattered throughout the map just to learn about the world that had been created for me to explore. Story is the driving force behind why we are in the areas we end up in to begin with. So it would be nice to know about where we are in depth instead of having it explained to us in 3 or 4 sentences.

                • There basically is no story at all. Also the "story" missions are just strike missions. You'd think that using strikes as a campaign the least they could do is give us a good story. How the heck are you alive after being dead? Why can't you revive any of the fallen guardians in the story mode? Where did all these enemy factions come from? What is this "traveler"? Any company can make a game and just throw you in the middle of it. This isn't warframe or Titan fall. It's BS if they're making dlc just to explain the story. Dlc should be extra content.

                  • I actually bought destiny for the "rich story tellin'" and co-op. rich story telling first. I have titanfall and cod and bf4 and im not just interested in the mindless trigger pull kdr and map selection. I wanted a story to give me a good reason to save the universe, and not just frag my fellow mankinds. so when I bought into the hype I was disappointed it wasn't present in the retail version. in fact I feel lied to but what ever I still play and hope it will give me a reason to buy an expansion pack, and not a storyline pack. #richstorytellin'

                      • When you set the bar of quality story telling with Halo people expect quality story again. Destiny is clearly not even close to that.
