Solutions for Disconnects and a Messege for Bungie

Alright folks. I've spent hours, days and perhaps even WEEKS searching the wastelands of the interwebs to find solutions to the disconnect problems I've had. I've laughed, cried, and consumed a fair amount of adult beverages in my quest to solve the error codes. I am posting here to (hopefully) help you all, and in hopes that Bungie hears a very simple message: We like the game. Might even say we Love it (although it's only been a few months and I feel like we are moving really fast...I don't say that word easily so please don't pressure me), and we are asking for help. I don't care how it happened, I don't care why, just please communicate with us! Tell us what you are doing more than just 'eventually' and 'trust us we care.' I want to trust you Bungie but you make it hard. Tell us what work you are doing, what findings you have, when you can fix them. Tell us what you are thinking about and how you are tackling the problem. We are here because we want to communicate with you, and we are frustrated because you are not communicating back. Alright, time to wipe my eyes and get on with the post. You've checked your speed on Speedtest.com and its good, low ping, high download and upload. You are not using wifi (you bad, bad child) but are instead using a Cat5e or Cat6 Ethernet cable. Still getting error messages? Try these fixes: Step 1) You can put your console in the DMZ, or you can forward your ports, or you can use UPnP. All these are done by logging into your router. These are not going to fix everything in Destiny, but it will make the experience better for Destiny AND all your other games. PortFoward is a GREAT site for how-to guides on this, so is Google. A lot of good guides exist out there (with screenshots!). You can choose ONE of the below options and only ONE. Do not use multiple, they will crash and burn. Make sure UPnP is deselected if you want to go one of the other routes etc. UPnP-This is the default option for many routers off the shelf, and for almost all ISP default routers. This options allows all ports to open when they are needed, and to close when they are not. Not terribly secure but very convenient, this option works for almost everyone. I do not do this because I like to have control and I like higher security. Think of it this way: Your console is your house, different ports are like different doors inside. With UPnP anyone who wants to go into your house needs to unlock the doors first. But this is done just by knocking...so not really secure. BUT the doors are locked after the person leaves. Forwarding Ports-Forwarding a port is the same as leaving one or two doors to your house unlocked. Anyone can go in, but they have to know which door is unlocked (and your house has billions). This is not the default option, and you can only do this is you have access to your router. Go to PortFoward to find how to do this and to find the exact ports to open. For this option you will first need to set your console to a static IP address. Again, this is pretty simple. You can do it through your router, which is recommended so that nothing else gets assigned the IP, or through your console. Lastly is the DMZ-This is akin to leaving all the doors on your house unlocked and wide open at all times. Not very secure at all. Information can come and go from Destiny servers, but so can data from any other source. DO NOT do this for your CPU! Consoles are generally safer (just because people don't care so much about hacking a console). You still need a static IP, but this option is easier because you don't need to know the specific ports. I don't do this because of the security concerns, but if you are worried about entering ports correctly, or you want to make sure you dont leave one out, then go ahead and put your console in your router's DMZ. 2) For those of you who have done step 1 already and are still getting errors (particularly HAWK, or CENTIPEDE or are just being dropped from online altogether) the next step is a frustrating headache. You cannot do this one on your own, you need your ISP to do it. Basically, there is a problem with one of Bungie's nodes. Thanks to CommunistShovel for first bringing this to my attention. An error is happening on the side of Bungie, preventing streamlined data from being sent. Now, I don't work for Bungie so I don't know how expensive/intricate a fix this would be for them, but there are two solutions for it. A) Wait for Bungie to fix it. Could be days, could be months, maybe they never will. As I said I don't work there so I don't know, perhaps they are already in the process of doing this and have not told us, or maybe they cannot go this route and are finding another one. But they coooooooould fix it, it just might be a while. A Long While. B) Call your ISP. This is where the headache comes in (enter COMCAST). They will not know what you are talking about. They will say you need a technician. Don't mention Nodes. It is not a local problem, it is not an issue with your local connections. You are getting onto the internet just find, it's the route you are taking to get to the Bungie servers that is the issue. So...to continue with the metaphor... You leave your house through a door that you opened (somehow, I don't care) and get in your car. You get onto the interstate just fine (interstate = internet) and you start driving towards your destination of Bungie HQ. When you are almost to Bungie, when you get off the interstate and are on the Bungie Ave or Bungie St. or whatever it is called (you can SEE the building!), the road suddenly gets rough. Very rough. Pot holes are everywhere, suddenly there are all these toll booths you have to stop at and pay, and before you can really register what happened your car is in a ditch on the side of the road. The Street just ended. Tell your ISP that you need to re-route your connection. You do not need a new local Node (that helps other things but that is not your problem here) you need a re-direction. You will have to call...and call again...and just keep calling until you find someone who knows what you are talking about. Do not let them send a technician, do not let them talk you into going into a service center, and do not allow them to waste your time testing your connection. Your connection is FINE and your speed is FINE. You need to change the pathway your signal is taking to get to the host (shout out to CommunistShovel again). If your ISP does this, great! You should be all set. If they wont do it, or if they DO and it doesnt work, there is really only one last-ditch effort left. 3) You changed the settings in your router, and you are on a different pathway, but you are still being disconnected. So now what? Now you shell out $300 for a nice router and modem. Yea. Seriously. That's not a joke. Sadly the only other thing it could really be is your gear. Well, your xbox/playstation is fine. They get updated regularly, and they aren't the issue. But that default, two-in-one modem/router combo sitting in the corner? Yea...that could be the problem. Here comes the metaphor... It's your Car! That thing is a car. Problem is that this car is designed not for the consumer, but for the company. Let me say that differently...when you sign up for internet with a company, say COMCAST, they will most often send you a two-in-on modem and router. The Modem just converts the Cable internet signal to an Ethernet one (It does more but that's all you really need to worry about) and the router takes that Ethernet signal and splits it up into other Ethernet signals or wireless ones. Fancy routers do more interesting things too. The box that the ISP sends you when you sign up is the CHEAPEST box they can get away with. Low cost, high simplicity. It works in MOST cases just fine, but if you want to do more with your internet than standard video streaming or email, you need your own set up. The box combines both Modem and Router into one machine, but sadly it does not perform very well on either ends. A standalone Modem or standalone Router will almost always outperform, and they have features which the Gateway Box will not. In Short, when you moved into your house you were given a really low quality car. The car will get you to where you need to go, but only if it is not very far away and the roads are in good condition. If you want to take a long trip, or if you want to go off-road, you need a better car. Bungie is, sadly, pretty far away and the roads are (as we have seen) not always great. So if you have set up your ports and the roads are clear (your ISP re-routed your signal) then you need to buy a new modem and router. Check to make sure the modem is compatible with your ISP by going to their sites, and get a router that has the features you want or need. Anything is generally better, so don't worry about that too much. Call your ISP to install your new Modem, then plug it in to your router. Set that one up with all the choices from Step 1 again, and try it out. Return your Modem so that you no longer pay the rental fee. If none of that works...sorry mate. Bungie has to fix it on their end. But here is the good news: Every fix I recommended is not DESTINY specific. These improvements will help you with all your games, not just this one. So you have not wasted any time, and your set up is better for it for all games. You should not have to work this hard to play a game, that responsibility lies with Bungie. So ultimately you have to ask yourself what it is worth to you. Do not do a job that is almost worth it, do not marry someone who you almost love, and do not play a game that you can almost play whenever you want. If any of these apply to you, let it go.

  • Hey Ninja! Thank you for taking the time and writing out this post. If the descriptions you have offered here help just one person out, I consider it a success! For those curious, much of what is described above can be found on our help pages, especially our NAT guide (http://www.bungie.net/en/Help/Article/11931). The language on our help page is a bit different though and while we will always point to our help pages, we also know that complex subjects can use additional explanation. I do want to offer a small warning to always show caution when adjusting network settings or configurations. Otherwise, thank you again for sharing your experiences RTB x NINJA.

    • Very informative. However, I never had a problem playing until the latest patch. Now to use your metaphor, if the patch rerouted me to some different streets would calling my ISP possibly help me get back to where I need to be? I can't realistically shell out $300 bucks on a router at the moment. And since I never had any problems playing before I doubt it has anything to do with ports or UPnP.

        • In regards to the last option about modem/router combos. I have one and connected a router to it, then enabled bridge mode on the modem. This turns your modem into just a modem and let's your router do all the work. I am now happily playing Destiny with no issues.

        • Thank you for this post. The last suggestion appears to have solved my problem. I had just received a new Gateway from Comcast. After spending weeks trying various settings and testing the connection, reinstalling the old modem with my Linksys router seems to have solved most of my issues for now at least. Destiny was the only game having this issue, however.

        • My quick question. If I play destiny every thing is awesome and fine. I also live with my brother in law. When he plays everything is awesome and fine. When we both try to play, hoho forget about it. Anyone know what would be going on here?

          • Appreciate people posting possible solutions, but there is no way in hell I'm shelling out more money then i already have just to play Destiny, it's not worth the hassle. Was looking forward to playing with my friends again and wanted this patch to fix the non-stop error codes i and many others have been having since early October. but it seems Bungie could give a shit less that a "handful" of their customers are having issues, as long as they get money from people buying the dlc they couldn't care about those of us that can't play, they've already shown they don't by continuously posting useless condescending solutions such as: "check your internet, check your NAT settings" Right, because all other games work fine online and also don't disconnect me from live service, it's clearly my problem. Well whatever, i should have known better, I've given into hype before and have only been disappointed. Serves me right i suppose, Lesson learned.

          • Dear Bungie, This means a lot to me. The Vault of Glass is very fun. Hell the best thing to do is the raid. Today we got together the best raid team I have ever seen. Thats a lot coming from me. Not too often I see such fine team working together. Every death led us closer to victory. We kept going at it, getting back up learning from our mistakes. Organized and prepared for the next round and the next. But our deaths were not the issues. As I saw my team mate keep bashing the pretorian it kept regaining its health. Atheon froze and the battle just became a glitch fess. Atheon only sending 1, to 2 players and players being sent into the portal had the bubble around them. Close to killing him and glitches became so common. Getting killed in the relic holder bubble shield when in the middle. The oracles dying, but yet no times vengeance. Bungie yes I understand pushing off a boss is wrong I prefer to do it legit and get my rewards by true victory. But this is just so wrong and frustrating how the most funnest thing in the game is so buggy. Please take this into consideration. Take down the raid until you fix it. There was times were yes it was our faults of failing. But when the game breaks itself to stop us from winning. Thats where this issue needs to stop. Please anyone having any other issues with the raid itself let yourself be heard. I know we all don’t want a buggy raid.

            • The game is now unplayable for me. Prior to a few nights ago there was no problem. Now, connection issues abound. Damn, I can't even playthe game at all. The bungie servers are broken and as far as I'm concerned the game is broken. I got 2 months gaming out of it. Damn.

              • Greetings I am here in the hopes of finding help. You see the problem is I have so much trouble getting to the tower. . Why you ask ? Beaver, leopard, Flatworm, Caterpillar, Apple, Eel, Rabbit, Fly, Centipede, Jackrabbit, Anteater, Quail, Baboon, Impala, Gopher, Jellyfish. Canary, Newt, Bee, Cat, Stinkbug, Zebra, Bass, Wessel, Pineapple, Kingfisher, Elk, Chicken, Currant, Marion berry, Beetle. These are most of the error codes I have come across in my time playing destiny. I believe a lot of these errors have been solved as I do not see most of them any more, But the problem still persists. When I play destiny in takes me on average 4 - 6 attempts to get into the tower. and when I do finally get there I could be there for a minute or an hour. Sometimes I get in first times other times I just give up and walk away. This is very frustrating for me as I really enjoy playing destiny but I can not take the anguish any more. Now I am not here to point fingers name names or call people out, Nor am I here to abuse or go on a tyrannical rant. I am here seeking help so I can once again enjoy my destiny experience. Here is what I no because I have try to work this problem out and fix it myself and although I have had success the problem is getting worse. I have a PS4 It has a static IP and DMZ I have opened all the ports according to the bungie help section. And when I first did this (opening the ports the rest was in place) I had immediate success and had the most solid connection. not one error code and one drop off I was ecstatic. Then along came Hotfix - 10/14/2014 and it undid all the work from my end and the error codes came back to haunt me. It started with taking multiple attempts to get to the tower, Then I started getting kicked from activities not very often but as time has progressed the error codes the drop offs have steadily increased. for example yesterday it took me 3 attempt's to do the daily event on one character and I have 3 characters ( and no its not because I don't have thumbs ) I have try doing activities with friends and solo it makes little to no difference. The main error code I am getting now are Beaver, Leopard, Flatworm, Rabbit and Quail. Please someone. . . anyone can you help me fix this issues I am having or point me in the direction of the problem ? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for time and energy.

                • Had the same weasel errors as everyone else (before that previously known as centipede) to be honest been getting problems pretty much since launch although not as often as I once did it's still bloody annoying Few things I have noticed though other might find helpful!! 1. Achievement lag seems to cause a boot 2. Tuesday reset day where players seem to on different versions causes issues I.e cannot join parties through friends etc. try getting all of party to restart the game especially for raids 3. Xb1 and ps4 maintenance periods always hurts destiny more than other games 4. Those resetting their routers in frustration be aware of dynamic line management aka DLM (uk anyway) this won't be helping your connection stability I was doing this it's a ball-ache for days after (until I researched its impact) go easy on your ISP Beucause in UK all ISPs use BTs exchange, with exception of Virgin. DLM is run through BT most ISPs have no control over it!!! 5. I requested my isp to turn my interleaving switch off my ping is 10 to London. I now get a consistent 74 Mbps down and 19 Mbps up although this might not be an option for most unless you have a pro package. 6. If you are on xb1 take the detailed network stats with a pinch of salt, it's getting data from the Microsoft Seattle centre not one from the local azure server to you 7. Port forwarding did nothing for me and to be honest The standard UPNP should be enough for most especially if you have a few devices connected! This should be reserved for people on campus or some other shared site most domestic users need not apply! 8. Obviously a no brainer but if you can connect to your router via Ethernet cable rather than wirelessly do so. If it's the latter play around with the channels using speedtest.net until you find the best channel. Most routers set this to auto which might pick up interference. 9. I have found a hard reset(holding xbox button for 8 seconds) helps also before turned off kinect which also seemed to stabilise for a time 10. Most routers have detailed network statistics check for noise margin and attenuation stats. Below a 6 is not good for noise... again research both of these, if anything you might squeeze a bit more speed out of your line when you do, will also give you ammunition with your isp 11. In uk those using fibre or adsl who are non virgin and wired to their router, look into using a splitter faceplate rather than filter with the master socket. You should see a more reliable connection. BT have just released mk3 VDSL filtered faceplate look this up as a first starting point and go from there. 12. My ISP is sky don't for a second Believe the bullshit they come out with, its clear after week or so of research I am now able to have a full debate and break down their poor scripting arguments with ease, and this is with their supposed "pro team" (I don't profess to be an expert in any sense). They also have very little in the way of diagnostics tools to help you, again the monopoly BT have in the uk by owning pretty much everything! Now if it's none of these sorry boys and girls your shafted like me :) ..... can it be anything other than bungie servers? Although some of these have seen me get fewer errors. Whether that's a result of my antics or Bungie who knows? The silver lining though is you might have learnt a bit along the way like I have:)

                  • Thank you thank you thank you! I haven't tried your solutions YET, but this is the first post I've seen since I began searching a couple of weeks ago detailing this horrible service and what MAY be done about it. I really hope bungie is reading. They've made millions upon millions selling their game, it's time they use that cash to stabilize it.

                  • Thank you for shedding some light on this frustrating issue. Even though I've attempted all of the above except for asking comcast to re-route ... not only receiving the myriad of beasts and insects, but being kicked from XBL... Thank you though for confirming my theory on the situation.

                  • Thanks for putting together an article that Bungie should have done themselves. It's really well written and explained, something that company like Bungie should be able to produce themselves. I find it very hard to accept that I have a connection which has zero problems with any other online game across multiple formats, even those that I use wireless connections with (I know, naughty me!), has such a huge amount of problems with Destiny. I'm NOT going to replace my router just for Destiny when it works well with CoD, WoW, SW:ToR, GW2, Titanfall, Diablo 3 and many others. What I will do is not buy DLC or any other product that requires an always on connection from Bungie. I'm aware that it's only me and Bungie are hardly going to be crying themselves to sleep over this but eventually I hope that people will start voting with their money and then hopefully things will be addressed or at least an appropriate warning can be given out to prospective purchasers.

                    • Per the XBL backbone, it's been deduced thus far that two of the major nodes are down...It may be that the pathway in and of itself, is an overflow pathway but, the nodes are most definitely, down.

                          • I've been seeing monkey and weasel errors pretty consistently since the last patch. Probably one every 30-45 min, sometimes as often as 4-5 min apart. I didn't know port forwarding and upnp conflicted, i will check that out and get rid of UPNP to see if it improves. The second part, calling the ISP, the game is great but I just don't care that much. It's really sad b/c it's an incredibly fun game, but at this rate if it doesn't clear up it's not worth dropping $35 on the expansions with so many games on the horizon. Battlefield 4 syndrome all over again.
