Hand cannons seem to have gotten a slight buff but not near enough. Why would I choose a hand cannon versus a scout rifle when they have pretty much the same damage per shot but one has almost twice as many rounds and a higher rate of fire and both equally accurate if the scout rifle is not more accurate or at least a little easier to aim. The hand cannon can't even get a one shot kill head shot on level 8, granted the scout rifle cannot either but with the limitations the hand cannon has ammo/ROF wise I think it should be a lot more powerful. Literally not enough bang for my buck on the hand cannon. Maybe there are better ones in the full game? But right now they are still resembling what should be a "secondary weapon" not a special but a secondary. Like an "oh no I'm out if rounds in my primary better switch to the last ditch effort to make it outta this!"
Any other opinions on these so called "cannons"?

Edited by MyriadWasTaken: 7/19/2014 5:48:17 AMTo clarify I am speaking more or less in regards to PvE since weapons are evened out a lot on PvP

I feel like the hc's are fine, but I think that bungie should nerf the rof on scouts, which would make the pulse rifles too more useable.

Edited by Dar Katan: 7/19/2014 6:48:48 AMHaven't played yet. But I have yet to watch a live stream that uses the hand cannon—not counting the golden gun. It seems that autos and scouts rule the arms race right now. I cannot wait to make my Hunter and use a hand cannon primary, sniper special and machine gun heavy.

Edited by RedFoxDreams: 7/19/2014 7:14:43 AMMY OPINION HC- Yes they do need alot more damage, im not one to complain and I actually love running around with a badash pistol, but when i put it on compared to any of my guns I found myself dying or reloading and running much to often. SR - I think is fine for the most part, accurate, strong, good all around. AR - I have yet to see a good AR rifle since like level 5 or so. My friend has a decent one. But only good for PVP , in PvE he falls short. PR - RECOIL IS HARDCORE , I dont get how a three round burst weapon can have more recoil than a dam machine gun, it kills it honestly, it would match up to the SR if the recoil was tuned down a bit. Not alot. Just a bit to actually get 2/3 bullets in the head most the time.

I have played the crap out of this beta and alpha. I have yet to get an uncommon hand cannon that I can yield under level 8. It's total crap. I play strike after strike for a drop and nothing. I get literally every other weapon but that.

Agreed that Hand Cannons need something else to make them feel good. They could do any of the following: 1) Increase the damage for body shots and precise shots. 2) Do something about the reload time. Either make it a lot shorter, or don't make me start over if I do something else while the animation is going. (Melee, throw a grenade, sprint, etc.) 3) Make it a special weapon. It would feel pretty good as a back-up gun, and having it available to me would make me much more interested in the "the last round in your mag does extra damage" affix on some primary weapons.

There needs to be a scope attachment! That'd make it a numbers best friend

Edited by DEZARATH: 7/21/2014 2:08:17 AMI'd say pull them all except for the ones like the the Thorn. Those HandCannons would be worth holding onto. The others are just not feeling right in the primary slot without buffs or major reload speeds being ramped up. If it was a legendary weapon then it would have value. The lesser variants are too overshadowed by the scout rifle and auto cannons.

They do decent damage but the 6 shots and same reload time as a bigger weapon is BS
-
Bungie really needs to read this...
-
I think instead of six rounds it should have eight and a faster reload speed
-
For me u think they're fine the way they are except for the reload time. It takes so damn long. Takes almost as long as my rocket launcher takes. Lol

Put it in another weapon class...or make another weapon class for weapons like it
-
I think the common ones are pretty useless but I bet as we get legendary and exotic hand cannons there would be some special abilities that make them worth using.

Hand cannons need a bigger clip and faster reload
-
I can't do shit with a canon, But some guy in Iron Banner -blam!-ing went HAM with one, 30+ kills 3 games in a row. 4.0 KD at the minimum. I was on the other team :/

Scout is long range. Auto is mid-range. Pulse is short range. All about the same effectiveness in their area. Hand Cannon is some terrible thing that doesn't really work at any point. Too much recoil for range use, lack of damage/clip/reload speed for mid/short range. The obvious niche would be to make it a precision-short range, with a higher damage output on headshots, which would separate it out from the Pulse Rifle and Shotgun. Or make the elemental damage and buffs on Hand Cannons better/more common then other guns.

I am watching streams and people are wrecking with them. It's the Halo CE pistol all over again!

I actually love Hand cannons but it looks like I'm in the minority. As long as your good at headshots in pve they are great and I rarely die.

Edited by CaptainFish: 7/21/2014 3:58:41 AMHand cannons have a higher crit. multiplier than all of the other primary weapons. They're perfect for players who have enough patience to take the on mid-range killing sprees or players who are crackshots in close quarters combat. I usually get into the top three slots in pvp with my Searcher MK. 37 and almost all of my kills in pve are headshots. In my opinion, the hand cannons don't need a buff or a nerf. My only problem with them is the ammo count. I don't mind the 6 rounds before you have to reload, but 60 rounds total isn't really at all that much to take on the Devil's Lair. And if you take advantage of your almost constantly surrounding environmental cover, then the reload times are perfectly manageable. tl;dr Hand cannons are great the way they are, they just need more total ammo. Edit: Hand cannons get two shot headshot kills in the right hands.
-
I use Hand Cannons exclusively in PvE and sometimes in PvP. The head-shot/kill ratio seems much stronger there, and it's easier to pull them off. But yeah, in PvP I choose a scout rifle most times. It pops off more rounds then a hand cannon can and as such is more versatile.
-
Honestly, it is a three headshot kill, so if you miss one bullet, the most kills you can get out of a clip is one. They look cool and all but are completely not viable as a weapon. I did see a legendary one that had a perk where if you miss a shot it has a chance to load one back into the clip. But I have always been a single shot weapon guy in the first place, so scout rifle for me.
-
As a hunter, PvE Hand cannons are the shit!!! 1 shot head shots everywhere, and stack your chain of woe to get super fast reloads, It's a high skill/high reward PvE gun. I've cleared whole waves with a single clip and it's the most fun gun I've used in the beta. However as for PVP.... Needs to be a 3-4 body shot 1-2 headshot. Because right now 3 head shots with that thing in PvP is -blam!-ing ridiculous since the recoil is unreal and people are constantly runing and jumping/flying around. It's near impossible to do good in PvP with a hand cannon.
-
Why everyone talks only that you need 3 headshots to kill with hc? Yes, you can't get 2 headshot kills, but the white hc that I used mainly required only one headshot and 2 bodyshots, which is a great ammount in close-to-mid range fights. I know you can get 3 headshot kills with scout, but more than likely one isn't a headshot, when hc remains a 3 hit killer

It's funny, I just made a post about the same thing as yours. I REALLY want to like them, but as it stands, I just can't bring myself to gimp my damage output by taking a HC over a scout or pulse rifle.
