Haven't played yet. But I have yet to watch a live stream that uses the hand cannon—not counting the golden gun. It seems that autos and scouts rule the arms race right now.
I cannot wait to make my Hunter and use a hand cannon primary, sniper special and machine gun heavy.

That's the exact build I used when I first started playing. For pvp, I suggest switching out your sniper to a shotgun and your MG to a rocket launcher. Taking on enemy control points is a lot easier that way. Also, go for headshots with your hand cannon. They have an incredibly high critical hit multiplier than almost matches the sniper's. A cannon with 62 attack deals 89 damage to another player with a headshot. Every player starts off with 200 health including shields. Two headshots and one melee attack can get you wherever you want to go in the crucible.

I'm doing a hunter build with hand cannon, fusion rifle and rocket launcher. And that seems to work real well for me. Especially since hunters get the throwing knife.

I use the same build, try getting used to sniping with a hand cannon, it makes the golden gun a weapon of the gods.

Nice. I may try that build with a Hunter and a Warlock.
