Well there you are in a Publice Event. Some monstrous boss has landed and has mocked you accordingly and you and your buddies swoop in for the attack. Lighting it up as it tries to destroy you. Another team joins and in and things look dire for the boss monster.
The other team of two promptly shoot the beast maybe once or twice and then they drop behind some cover and you find yourself fighting for your life again.
Behold you and your friends survive and widdle down the beast's life while the other team waits it out getting a sandwich while dancing thanks to a taped down button.
The boss on its last micro ounce of life ready
to pop like a evil piñata of badassery weapons gets a rocket to the face from the other team who decided to rejoin in the fight who now run merrily down to collect their loot stream while you try to find your friend's death balls to revive them.
You fought hard for twenty minutes. The other team shot off six rounds at the most and put in five seconds to the fight.
What Happens Bungie?

Everyone in the group gets loot. Once the AFKers collect the yellow orb(loot), you get your reward as well.
-
I never understood AFKers.... Why would they want a cool gun if they are barely going to use it.
-
Edited by Trevelyan: 8/5/2013 10:15:03 PMUse AFK-ers as meatshields or a distraction. Simple.
-
I really think it should be a damage based reward system
-
An interesting line of thought, but I imagine it won't be as big as a problem as you would think. It all depends on the Public Event, some might not allow you to simply AFK. I don't think it would be too hard to determine AFK behavior and to not reward people as a result of it.
-
I couldn't care about this issue because it will make killing the boss more satisfying with fewer people. I like to earn my level, equipment and gear and feel bad for the cheaters who exploit the system.
-
In the stage demo, the Hunter only shot the Fallen boss a few times, died, then got a Sniper Rifle so performance probably won't matter. If people prefer to play the game by hiding, they probably won't have as much fun with it in the long run and will stop playing soon anyway, leaving the game to people who actually want to experience it the way it was developed to be. How others behave in public events and what they awards they get shouldn't matter, because at the end of the day you'll probably never play with them again unless you friend them.

Edited by Zeldafan92: 8/5/2013 8:48:09 PMyou could be evil like me and make the boss come over to their hiding spot , allowing them to get bombarded with heavy weapons fire while their on that sandwich run . just imagine it they come back and their guardians dead and they are like what the hell ? you'll be like ; well while you were away doing whatever , where you were seemed like I more tactically strategic spot to shot from and yeah you died , maybe next time you wont walk away from a fight to go get that sandwich , yeah ?
-
It records your performance in combat. Notice that in the demo, the main player got the thunderlord, while the hunter got a generic sniper rifle because she was downed the whole time.

Edited by Guru: 8/5/2013 8:50:14 PMSo what if I am an ungodly newb. I am garbage at this game and only get off a few shots before dieing many times. Should I be penalized for sucking the ultimate suck. The knife cuts both ways. Some people can exploit it but it will help. If anyone says anything wrong about sucking the ultimate suck...
-
I dunno, man. I think there will be enough people for a few AFKers to be insignificant. I also don't think these Public Events will be so big and drawn-out that a sandwich would be made and enjoyed by the time the event was over, especially when it has been mentioned that players will range in levels, so you'll get some heavy hitters and some pea-shooters in the same fight.
-
A bunch of guys miss out on an epic moment. But I didn't see any loot drop when the devil walker died. Maybe that's reserved for more private boss fights.
-
The amount of loot you get should be determined by % of damage you do to the enemy(s).
-
I'm pretty sure that Bungie is taking care of that
-
I'd say they get loot based on there performance. 6 shots should just give you ammo and glimmer.
-
I hope bungie finds a way to combat this...
-
For all we know the drops could be based on contribution, and people who don't work as hard get crap drops.
-
You also have to remember, yeah loot is cool and all, but the fighting is what we play for. I doubt there will be as many kids AFK trolling in public events as there will be kids trolling in BTB in Halo. Also it's not CoD. The one thing that has always separated Halo/Bungie players from CoD players is the passio for PLAYING the game. Not just leveling up to the next prestige. Coming from a die hard Halo and CoD player.

There was a small paragraph in the Sept Edge Mag article that made it sound like participation plays a part in loot drops. It's towards the second half of the article where they're retelling a story about trying to defeat a boss solo. They didn't flat out say it, but it hinted at some sort of checks-and-balances.
-
I will kill them
-
More challenge and fun for me, that's what happens. If people want to not play the game they paid $60 for, and waste energy, that's their stupid decision.
-
I, too, am worried about this.. If you can shoot it once, which would make it count as you being involved in the fight and then wait for everyone else to kill it.. and then collect your loot.
-
You both move on with your lives.
