Well, Dr. Paul R. McHugh, the former psychiatrist-in-chief for Johns Hopkins Hospital and its current Distinguished Service Professor of Psychiatry says you're wrong.

Well, Dr. Paul R. McHugh is -blam!-ing wrong. His whole argument shows he doesn't have the slightest idea what it feels like to be transgender, to be trapped in a body that isn't congruent with your mind, to be forced into a societal gender role that doesn't fit you. I don't give a -blam!- what this guy's qualifications are, you can find plenty of people with similar qualifications who say the exact opposite.

I get it, the psychiatric doctor that studied for years, wrote over a 100 peer reviewed papers, and has held 2 top positions at one the nations top universities for medicine is wrong because your "feeling" say different.

Yeah, that's right. I don't care how much research you do, when it comes to mental issues such as this, you can't truly have any clue what's going on in someone's head unless you are that person. I have trans friends that were [i]suicidal[/i] before they came out, and now that they've been through hormone treatment, had surgery, etc. they're so incredibly happy. For these people hormones and surgery are a medical [i]necessity[/i], they can literally [i]save people's lives[/i].

Considering post-op's are 20 more likely to commit suicide, I wouldn't call it saving lives.

The suicide rate in [i]pre-op[/i] trans people is much higher. The post-ops that have committed suicide are those that thought surgery would help them but didn't. More than likely those people weren't truly transgendered, as much as they believed they were. I'd blame that on their therapists/doctors for allowing them to go through with the surgery when clearly it wasn't for them. The surgery isn't for everyone that thinks they're transgender. There have been people that have gone through with the surgery that shouldn't have. But for the true transgender, the surgery is absolutely life-saving.
