I just got thorn last night. I really want to upgrade it to the DoT effect, but not sure if it is worth it and will make it a lot better, or if I am wasting my time :/

It's worth it, the DoT effect is great for crucible and carries well in PvE. The only issue I have ever had is the slow reload coupled with the small clip size. Those may prove challenging in say the Raid but I was able to get through it. In addition there is the possibility of a buff coming in the future which should help offset those issues.
