Title says it all. For me it has to be Julius Caesar, who is considered the first unofficial Roman Emperor and arguably the first dictator in the world. He accomplished this through deception, manipulation and outright defiance of the current power. He was also a military genius, employing unconventional tactics to great success. The Battle of Alesia ( 52BC ) is a great example of this.
