I kind of miss the older era of gaming where games were more difficult and just about every game had a boss battle or multiple boss battles, and it each one held a new challenge. It would be hard to take down the bosses from time time, sometimes even taking 3, 4, or maybe even 5 or more tries. But once you beat that boss, the feeling you get is oh so satisfying. You feel accomplished. And it feels good.
Now a days games barely have boss battles, which is a shame, because they're fun. The few games that do have boss battles, the battles aren't as challenging as in previous generations. Now a days you can usually beat a boss on your first try, and if not that, then on your second try. You don't get as much satisfaction out of it, and you don't feel accomplished.
It's honestly quite sad that games have come to this. Now, I'm NOT saying that every game without a boss battle or with an easy boss battle is a bad game. I'm not saying that AT ALL. There are a ton of great games without boss battles, and that's ok, but I personally like to feel that sense of accomplishment. I like that what I actually do throughout the game, and how I progress throughout the game will greatly affect any boss battles, making them either easier or harder.
Do you guys feel the same way about this? If not, what are your thoughts then?

1 ReplyBoss battles need bosses without healthbars. Bring back that idea that you don't know if you're just about to kill them or not. I loved the bear fight on Metro: Last Light, because you had no idea how close it was to dying.

Artorias Dark souls I have nothing more to say have fun being his bitch to that Blaming! Stun lock

Defeating Pic Related was 100x times more satisfying than beating this joke of a Final Boss.

2 RepliesStar Wars Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast was like the master of boss battles. Reelo, Tavion, Dessan and even the mini-boss Shadow Troopers were awesome to fight. Jedi Academy had some cool boss fights too, but not quite as cool as its predecessor.
-
Nintendo games usually still have good boss fights.

While the latest installments of Final Fantasy have been kind of lame their boss battles are still up to snuff. Mostly because of the music though....

Edited by Phwip: 6/29/2013 4:49:17 AMI've always liked Halo's difficult boss fights. No lie I died the first time facing the Didact because I pressed the wrong button. Guilty Spark shoots frickin' laser beams out of his eyes. Gets me every time. Tartarsauce was really hard but I like pew pewing him with the Banshee.

Kingdom Hearts boss battles.....oh god. I remember it took me 2 months to beat riku at Hollows bastion :S

Go back and play Ninja Gaiden 2 or Ninja Gaiden Black. Both had badass boss fights that harkened back to the old days of difficulty and satisfaction.

1 ReplyDark Souls, my friend.

Yea... The Legend of Zelda is the only series that I've played in the past 10 years to have good boss fights.
-
I think Borderlands have cool bosses. Well some of them.

There are a few good ones, you just have to hunt for them But you're right, most boss fights are pretty much pointless now.

2 RepliesRaids in WoW are pretty tough if you actually get a team together and not do LFR. You can go in with 10-25 people one night, and leave not killing one boss in the entire raid; each time you get together, you get more coordinated as a team and will eventually succeed.
