Charges of Blackmail should be laid against CNN.

CNN broke federal law: Section 241 of Title 18 is the civil rights conspiracy statute. 1st I don't see how his freedom of speech is being threatened. No one is threatening to lock him up or anything, just say "this guy said all these shitty things." You have the right to free speech, no one is questioning or threatening that. But does freedom of speech guarantee you anonymity? When I think of this troll I think of that little girl who not that long ago was bullied and cyberbullied and ended up hanging herself on live stream while other horrible human beings encouraged her, sexualized her, said things like "what a waste of good pussy" Again, this was a little girl. People act despicable like that because the -blam!-ing cowards aren't brave enough to put their names to it. Some people in this thread, including you OP, really need to learn what the first amendment actually does. OT: If the poster in question's online words/actions were to be revealed to those he knew in real life, I definitely would have a hard time feeling all that sympathetic for him. That being said, I also think it's absurd that CNN would make such a big deal out of this, much less go to such lengths to identify the man behind the meme. This whole debacle paints the people at CNN as incredibly out of touch and humorless fools I think. Either that or their skin is so thin it would put Trump to shame, and the coverage and investigation of the meme are just out of vindictive spite, but I'm willing to give them the benefit of the doubt. Now, whether CNN's attempt to contact the poster and his subsequent apology are related, and if they are, whether that constitutes willful intimidation is definitely up to interpretation, but I'm not particularly concerned with that. Nor am I particularly concerned with whether or not CNN publishing his name would constitute doxxing, though I'm really not sure it would. They're a news organization after all. It is literally their job to investigate. Given the nature and severity of the "crime" though, maybe the rules are a bit different. Anyways, the article says he called CNN after issuing his apology to confirm his identity and asked that it not be shared, and CNN followed his request, which is all well and good, but the following two paragraphs seem to immediately dispel any notion that CNN safeguarded his identity based on his request. Instead they imply, or outright state really, that the only reason they withheld his name is because he promised to be a good boy or whatever, and that they can and will publish it should the situation change. I don't see how anyone can think that's okay. That [i]is[/i] tantamount to blackmail in my book, regardless of whether CNN as a news organization has the "right" to withhold or publish whatever information they want. It really rubs me the wrong way and strikes me as unethical to the extreme for any news organization to do that, much less CNN. It's indefensible.

This really should be the spark to ignite a firestorm against cnn. Infringing on someone's first amendment right, regardless of what that person said, is against federal law and cnn should face the consequences for it. Everyone in America has the right to say whatever they want and if you don't like what you hear then you can ignore it. No-one is making you listing/watch to what an individual is saying. If you are angered by someone saying something then that's your problem, it's when words become actions is where free speech ends, and I'm talking about actions that can physically hurt people and property. If a single person's right to speak can be taken away then everyone's right to speak is at jeopardy.
