Here's my concern....this game requires a connection to bungie's servers to play....
what happens down the road when they shut down the servers? it's not like halo, where the only thing we'd lose is multiplayer...we'd lose the whole game.
so we're spending 60 bucks a pop (100, and 150, for those of us getting the limited editions) for a physical copy of a game, that we won't be able to play at all once the servers are down....unless, bungee sends out an update before throwing the switch, that somehow renders that server connection unnecessary.
that's really the most concerning thing about destiny. it's an absolutely amazing title, i enjoyed the alpha and beta builds immensely, and i have the game on pre-order.....this game is classic bungie magic, and i love it...i'm just concerned about that one little thing, lol
what say you, Guardians?
(EDIT TO ADD: wow, what the hell happened to the second poll option?)

Edited by Caelos81: 8/12/2014 10:26:33 AMI used to think like you, concerned about the game not being available anymore if servers go down for good. But since then I've played a lot of online games which outlasted me and are still going strong even when I'm no longer playing those games. I have every faith that Destiny will not disappoint and that I'll be seeing this franchise alive and strong for a good while.

Edited by Ghost in Gears: 8/8/2014 6:00:07 AMSixty dollars is not the price of a lifelong investment. If you lived on your own, you'd know that's the kind of money you'll spend at the grocery store about biweekly. More or less. I'm not very thrifty. It's also how much you spend on getting Xbox live gold for a year. Fifteen years (the planned lifespan of the project) is also a long time. Do you really think you'll be playing Destiny that long? Fifteen years later, I'll be nearly 40 years old. In the span of fifteen years, I might have kids. In the span of fifteen years, we could go to war with Russia and blow each other up. In the span of fifteen years, we could land on Mars and actually find the Traveler—I mean not really, that's probably not going to happen. I was just trying to put it in perspective. I'll stop now.

OP these things are not meant to last for eternity. Not even for an entire generation. Once i becomes obsolete you'll be glad that you got your disk ghost edition that will be on its way to becoming a legendary antique that you can profit greatly from.

So what if years from now I want to plug in my old black & white analogue tv and there aren't any broadcasts in analogue anymore, well I'd better be able to demand my money back from that store that doesn't exist anymore, because the internet destroyed everything..... Oh hang on, seriously though, you pay $60 or $200 or whatever and get hundreds of hours of enjoyment out of a game and you are worried about some distant future where your game won't work anymore, seriously dude you pays your money and it's good value or it isn't, to me, Destiny is excellent value.

Ughh come on man the game's not even out yet. Live in the now ffs

4 RepliesI hope Bungie doesn't pull a THQ. 500 Mill in developement is a lot of money to develop a game. I never thought THQ would close with the success of Dawn of War etc. I think Bungie is stronger than THQ was but this IS a fickle business.
-
I honestly won't care because there are in fact other games coming out
-
I am not really concerned but I wouldnt mind an offline option, if e.g. the provider is down or has problems...

If you are concerned about losing this option, then look at any technology that has been replaced in the past. If you can get your money's worth of enjoyment out of the game, then when the servers go down (probably) years down the track, you should be satisfied.
-
Probably won't have to worry about anything like that for ATLEAST 10 yrs

Just caNceled my destiny psn pre ordered For cod advanced warfare seems more fun and contained. Plus I can completely enjoy the campaign with Kevin spacey offline, and multiplayer offline with bots and maybe they'll have like another mode like cyber zombies or something. Honestly if destiny had offline I wouldn't be in this situation.

4 Repliesyea im also afraid that after 10 years they will shut down their servers
-
11 RepliesMAG was an online only game. While being an amazing game and doing a variety of "console firsts", many people were unaware of its existence. They kept the servers up for over 4 years. If a game that had as little hype and attention (which translates often into playerbase and sales) as MAG has its online-only gameplay servers up for that length of time..I am sure Destiny will be fine.
-
10 Repliesdo you realize how long halo 2's servers stayed up?
-
Games like this usually don't pull the plug on their servers for years. I'm thinking the Destiny servers will be up a good 4 to 5 years after they release the second game.
-
18 RepliesThe internet is online only, does this concern you?
-
Edited by ContextError: 8/11/2014 4:48:11 PMIt'll be fine, as long as people keep playing, I'd bet on bungie working to keep a couple servers going for you, long after the shine wears off of destiny.

In the future all wifi will be free
-
I honestly doubt that the servers will go down in the future. Look at cod (only using this as an example because they are both under Activision). I can still play cod 4 if I really had the urge to.
-
Destiny 5 on XboxOmega and PS5. By then someone will have figured out a way to create a private server for hacked consoles too. Most people won't care and will have moved on.

1 ReplyApparently no one knows how to read your whole post OP.

I agree, what if a while down the road I want to get all nostalgic and destroy some cabal on the original destiny, and BAM the servers are down so I can't play? Kinda lame.

13 Replieshttp://www.ign.com/articles/2014/07/24/inside-destinys-secret-nerve-center-a-ign-first This should put your mind at ease. There will always be at least 2 employees manned on the servers, and they have several backup server locations to ensure always-online truly is always-online. And remember, we're dealing with Bungie and Activision here, not DICE and EA.

As long as they keep the servers running for a year or two I will feel I got my money's worth, anything less would be a cheat
