Member Impersonation and other Display Name issues

I like that we are able to change our ID every week and display name whenever, and I also like that past names are shown in the profile (meaning it's easy to spot a trouble maker). Even so, there are already impersonators running around and others quite worse. This is due in part to not only the ease of changing a name and the lack of unique aliases, but also because new or obscure posters are finding it more and more difficult to have their replies and topics noticed among the mush. While I can't imagine any perfect system, I do think there should be something to combat the inevitable member impersonation and otherwise inappropriate display names. However, I think the problem goes deeper than just being able to change your name easily. What do you guys think?
-Allow only 7 name changes -Unique ID only changed once every 30 days -Report faux user

GrandmasterNinja: Or they should make the join date visible when hovering the mouse over the username/avatar.

Hylebos: Here's an idea I had last night: If you recently changed your display name, your name should be tinted a certain color, or perhaps have an asterix following it for a full week to give users a heads up that they might want to look at the Unique ID of the account to figure out who it is. That might put a wrench in all but the most premediated of impersonations. Afterall, it's obvious that Hylebos* is not the same person as Hylebos.
This is exactly why I include a user's true ID and their current name when I quote them. I feel as though Bungie has simply down-graded the forums, we can't even see the original date a 'reply' (more like 'comment') was posted if there was an edit and we can't preview our posts. I've noticed that they've made some incremental changes since the Beta, but why have they not done more optimizing yet? I'm currently holding out as they're certainly cranking away at Destiny and we are still barely seeing the usual release of content, but I'd like to see more response to feedback of this new layout. I say that they show a linked XBL and/or PSN profile when we quick-view a user.

I don't think display names should be unique as they were in the past as it allows members to have the username they'd like without the typo, but the community needs to be more aware about detecting false accounts. The ideas already listed in the OP do help, but here are some things I use to verify an account. -Unique ID -Follower Count -Join Date -Title/Legacy Member (you can't impersonate other members when they have a title on their name) -Avatar (I'm talking if the user uses a Halo Emblem/Forum Ninja, those cannot be created anymore) -Even as far as groups they're in and groups they've created It may seem a bit of a hassle looking through ALL this information, but taking a second before you follow someone to make sure it's them, will easy the pain. Not to mention, AFTER you follow that person, when I click on your tag it actually displays a check under followed like I "verified" your account myself. So whenever I see a "Goat" impostor, I just hover their name, and if they don't have that check, I know they're fake. It wouldn't be a bad idea to throw join date on those hover tags either. In all reality, if someone is trying to impersonate a user and representing them falsely, just mute them.

Of course you would be a baby about this since you take the site so seriously. We don't want your honor offended! (I'm not actually against preventing things like this from happening, Goat is just a big freaking baby, Hylebos can be also)

  • Impersonating someone is a bit of a childish way to prove a point about excessive name changes.

Titles would be a good way to combat member impersonation. Almost no one could impersonate Mythix because the blue bar is hard to achieve, especially for an impersonating troll. And for members and such (the titled members who are easier to impersonate), IDs will still be shown for verification. Or maybe they could put in a system where you cannot have the same name and avatar as another user.

  • It's not that big of a problem. One can pretty easily just click the person's name and see if they have other aliases. I am, however, confused by your "sparkfire" one.

My head explodes just thinking of impersonation. *Brain is melting attempting to reboot.* It would be nice if you hover over your Account it flashes it to the user over the name showing Account ID.

  • I think impersinations would stop if they still had the title system visible. I mean it would be difficult to impersonate a Mythic Member unless of course you were already a Mythic Member. Or they should make the join date visible when hovering the mouse over the username/avatar.

It might be better to only allow a small number of changes. Although I like that I could drop my retarded old name.

      • If you want to change your name, you can. But it'll show up if it's already taken in the database.

      • DeeJ said they left some features out and that this whole thing was a test. It just occurred to me, what if they're are testing to see if the renaming feature will be abused and ways to fight it. It would make sense that they would leave titles out for now. Then popular Mythics and Legendaries could be impersonated, moving their little experiment on quicker. Wait, what if they're testing to see if we figured that test out?! Or is that the test?! Or is that th*HeadExplodes*

        • Make the unique ID permanent, or at least last a much longer time. Call it, three months over a week. Adds an ease of identification to profiles. I know name changing can happen whenever, but I can deal with that.

        • While it's decent for anyone who wants to abandon their misspelled or otherwise tarnished persona, it's detrimental to the individualism of each poster. I could change my name to "A Three Legged Goat" and people would believe I'm you. Sure, a quick look at my profile would dismiss it, but who's to say my threads wouldn't then carry the same weight as yours?

          • I think most of that problem will go away once titles come back, but I do wonder what Bungie will do with the renaming feature in Bungie.next, because of those problems you stated.

Something I'm wondering is why unique ID's are changeable. Only display names should be changeable, so if you go onto a users profile, you can see who they really are by looking at their unique ID

            • There should be a 'user rating system'. The members with a negative rating due to trolling, etc, shouldn't be allowed to change their name.
