Is the gender of your ingame character the same as your real life gender?

At times, I come across folk in game whose game character is the opposite gender. Now generally I find this is more common amongst male gamers who play as female characters. Why is this? I'm a female gamer and I play as female characters and am trying to understand why some males like to play as a female. I'd appreciate some insight into this please and hope that my cynical thoughts are unfounded. 😊

  • Sometimes. Depends on the game and the character.

Yes, making a female for aesthetic reasons is weird. If there’s an inherent advantage to it like different abilities like Maya or Lilith or some shit like Borderlands then no not at all, they have different playstyles as opposed to Salvador running around and moneyshotting the world Hell even Fallout has an advantage to picking gender. The perks can bypass combat situations.

    • Sometimes. For example, in FFXIV, one of the only games I play anymore, I was a male for a year and a half or so, then switched to female, and I find myself tempted to switch back.

Yes. Males who play as females are weirdos. No matter what excuses they come up with. And I've heard a lot.

        • If the option exists and it matters for more than just cosmetic reasons, I’ll play both. BioWare games have been where this happens the most.

            • Almost always a male character. I'm a male, and I like to roleplay as one. Most of the time I have no problem separating myself from my character, so for me it doesn't make it easier or harder to roleplay based on the gender. I have played a female character before though, an example being Skyrim. I was playing survival mode, and I decided that if I die, I delete the character. I chose a female character because they get a bonus against men, which are the majority of bandits. It was calculated to help me survive, but it didn't work, as I died before I even got the perk...

                      • Guy with female character. Usually armor in games looks too bulky on male characters and on female characters it looks a bit slimmer and has a better look overall

                      • I tend to like to immerse myself in the game world, so when I make a character I tend to make it like me (a guy). Because of that, all my characters in all the games where I’ve made one tend to look similar because I make them all to look like me. The exceptions are games where I’m able to play as something other than a human. My Skyrim character is an Argonian

                      • I'm a guy and have a female character. The Male protagonist hero has been overplayed thanks to Hollywood. In other games such as mass effect, dragonage and AC odyssey I play as both I enjoy the perspective both offer. Do like how the homophobic people I know find it weird yet have no issues staring at a Male ass as it rides a sparrow in doggy position 😂

Sometimes people are just eggs and they're living out who they want to be and in denial. Other times, they just want to wear the opposite genders clothes which are exclusive and they like them more. Other other times, they were horny at the character screen. Other other other times, they want specific romance options.

                        • Yeah, I don’t really see the benefit of playing as another gender, as there isn’t much advantage as playing as the other sex.
Sorry Partner, but You’ve Yeed your last Haw
• Mostly. I usually only play as a different gender either to mix things up or for shits and giggles. I go back and replay old Pokemon gens all the time, and sometimes, it's nice to break the monotony. This most recent gen I played as the female trainer because the Scottish trainer memes -blam!-ing killed me. As for bigger games with character creators (open world games usually, monster hunter, etc.), I'll usually make a male character u less I have a really specific and stupid yet hilarious (to me) goal in mind, like if I want Lois from Family Guy to dominate the Fallout Wasteland or something.

                          • I am a dude irl and I play male characters. Never played a female character before and don't have the desire to play one. It's not that it weirds me out, I just don't really care all that much since most games I play, the character customization is not a big feature. In Density, I only played exo characters, so it doesn't really matter.

                          • Depends how I feel when I create the character. Sometimes I'll want to play the game as "myself" Sometimes I'll want to play as a really attractive female. I usually play as a female for this reason: I want to see a hot character rather than the generic male character I create.

                            • I’m a dude, I play as dudes, and I naturally most enjoy other dude NPCs most of the time. However, I can offer you a few reasons somebody might choose the opposite gender, starting guys playing as girls: 1.) Character custmization. Often times (as in D2) the female models have WAY more options, allowing for more unique avatars. 2.) Hitboxes. This isn’t a thing anymore, but if we throwback all the way to early HALO games, all the competitive players played as female characters. This was because the female model had legitimately (however marginally) smaller hitboxes. 3.) Sex appeal. ‘Nuff said. Girls playing as guys: 1.) Armor sets. Even if I was a girl, I’d play as a male Titan (again using D2 as an example), because I think the female equivalent of the armor I love looks way worse. I know this sentiment is shared pretty across the board. 2.) Sex appeal. ‘Nuff said. This is just what I’ve observed, hope it helps

                              • Depends on the game really. With some games there are advantages to being one gender over the other while with others I go for a bit of diversity. Additionally sometimes I feel it fits the game better for example I use the female character in Dishonored 2 because you are the male in the first or with Elder Scrolls games I've got a bloodline thing going with female Khajiits who use the same first name.
