There's nothing wrong with having to grind for new armor regularly.
It's a grinding game. That's what it's all about.
The issue is that masterworking armor is much more expensive and time-consuming than its worth when new sets with new mechanics are released so frequently.

I dunno. Out of 12 weeks, dedicate 1 week to farming cores masterwork your gear. Doesn't seem that bad to me 🤔

You also have to actually find the gear you want to invest in, by the time you do that, the season might be almost over and you might as well just wait for the new set. Armor 2.0 could be much better.

It definitely has issues, but time investment is not it. It doesn't need to be any easier

There is when it takes so long to get proper stat rolls. You can either have armor that takes a while to get right OR armor you have to change every three months. Not both.

Id be fine with the system if ascendant shards were removed and it just cost 3 prisms on the last upgrade

Well, there's fun grind that doesn't feel grindy, and then there's Destiny 2. :P Tedious grind for mediocre rewards does not convince anyone to grind more, it just makes them give up, and definitely no FOMO. Other games, well-designed games, can still have a certain element of grind, whether it's for new and fun loot or for XP, but there's always some sort of pay off at the end that makes you feel rewarded for grinding. As it is now, what you get for said grind isn't worth the tediousness and annoyance, and really, that's been a problem in D2 for quite a while with regard to not respecting player time and effort invested in the game. It's just one more reason for me to not care about grinding PvE entirely, and just go play Crucible, as broken as it is, because at least it can be fun when no one is cheating. :P Sometimes I feel like PvE in D2 is only fun if you cheat by running exploits, cheesing encounters, etc.
