"We're up against a deadline"

Anybody else getting sick of this excuse from Luke Smith? You had 3 years to figure out what you wanted Destiny to be. You had many years before that when you announced at E3 that Destiny was supposed to be this rich, cinematic adventure where "we could go to that mountain over there" so we'd throw our money at our screens. And still, he continues to use the same tired "we have ideas that we're excited about, but they may not be ready in time because of our deadlines" rhetoric. Either Bungie devs are incompetent and can't manage to meet deadlines, or the deadlines are unreasonable and Bungie can't realistically get their work done in time. Either way, it's bad for customers, and I'm beginning to think it's the former. It's 2017, and a Destiny 2 release won't have custom games and other core features at launch. More is being removed from the game than added or expanded upon. Luke's response to "since there are no stat rolls to chase, how are people going to stay engaged and grind?" is "we have ideas, but right now we're focused on the launch deadline." I can't help but be skeptical and feel like this is going to be yet another incomplete game at launch. What a joke. The game has been in Beta since its production began in 2010. Only now are they finding a way to use the European Dead Zone and Cabal raid that were cut out of VANILLA. But they feel their deadline (which was already delayed by a year) is rushed and we won't get all of the features we should have (custom matches, for example) right away..

    • Turns out creative works -- both art and engineering -- are better when you can take your time instead of rushing. That's why CD Projekt Red hasn't announced any semblance of release date for 2020 except "when it's ready."

      • Any kind of artistic endeavour is going to run into the vaunted deadline. The deadline is Sept 7 for the complete game, so I could only imagine what all the little things that have to be done by specific dates. Of course Bungie/Activision could always push back the date if they really wanted to, but at some point they do have to release new stuff.

Are we going to completely ignore the fact that coding and game design in general is not a walk in the park and when you have a the people who are funding you breathing down your neck, it does not make things easier. I am not trying to shift the blame here, but developers have their hands tied when being backed by a publisher. Both funding and marketing is done by the publisher and if the developers do not comply to their signed publisher, both those can be pulled and the game will be cancelled. Anyone remember Scalebound - an action-RPG where you had a pet dragon that was and XBone exclusive? Well, the developers did not make any of the sechdule deadlines so Microsoft pulled the plug. Now this could be the vision of the game the developer want is too unrealistic, making it a nightmare to develop, or Microsoft pushing for ridiculous, hard to meet deadlines. This could be the same with Bungie.

          • Having to get a project done in a set amount of time with a certain budget is called scope, it's something all companies have to consider before doing anything, just because you want them to push the release date doesn't mean they can

            • Destiny has always been marketed as a game that's constantly changing. Nobody should be surprised anymore that nothing is ever set in stone.

            • I've played exactly three custom games since they were added to Destiny. Therefore, I do not care. The new weapons system looks good, and I'm excited for a return to 4v4 game types. There will be plenty of armor and weapons, plus Exotics of both, to chase. From the looks of it, Patrols will be actually useful. I, for one, am looking forward to D2 and am satisfied with the way things are looking so far.

Everyone in this thread makes me laugh, you all have no concept of how long game creation and coding takes... one post said they shouldn't have changed the release date so they could finish the game hahahahaha, how does one finish a game in two more days hahahahaha, you guys all need a colouring book.

That's what Bungie experienced under Microsoft...and this is what most developing studios experience under wealthy publishers.. I'm amazed at the amount of naive people...especially the ones stating "if Activision is pushing, Bungie should push back." Not mentioning how the OP stated that 3 years is pathetic and it should be enough. We should just have our generic yearly CoD trash am I right? Only a beggar would understand the issue of another beggar.
