More paths to 300+ gear...

First and foremostly, let me say that I'm glad we finally have some news on King's Fall Hard Mode. Finally we'll get our hands on some sweet 310-320 gear! However, this puts even more emphasis on raid completions to remain a competitive player. Frankly, some of us don't like the raid (not me personally, but there are plenty out there). Some of us cannot find a decent enough group to complete the raid with, and still others are too focused on PvP to give a damn about raiding. So, when Lord Saladin and Brother Vance come out to play, those who do not participate in the raid are at a significant disadvantage. I think there needs to be other paths to obtaining 300+ gear. Iron Banner gear should have been 300 light. We haven't seen Brother Vance's wares as of yet, but I'm guessing those will be 280, like every other vendor. I could be wrong, Brother Vance originally had 365 gear while every other vendor (besides Variks) had 300 gear. So, with the release of the hard raid, will we see rare/legendary drops at 300-310 elsewhere in the world? Will the vendors start carrying 300-310 gear? Probably not. Yet again, the economy is heavily skewed toward one activity, that can only be completed once per week, that has a frustratingly low drop rate. My few runs have netted me a couple bonds, a couple shells, 3 weapons, and ONE pair of boots. Underwhelming to say the least... Bungie, you wanted to avoid a rehash of 'Forever 29', yet we're back to the same thing. After checking perks, I dismantle gear under 290 without hesitation. Vendor gear at 280 is already worthless. Now my 'floor' will be 300? Sheesh... The options are pretty simple: 1. Increase drop rates for armor/weapons in King's Fall 2. Increase range of non-raid drops to 310 3. Increase Iron Banner / Trials of Osiris / Crucible drops to 300-310. I don't think I'm alone on this one... I hit 295 pretty quickly on all my characters. 295 - 300 is a slow crawl. 300+ is going to be unbearable for the majority of the community. EDIT: I said this as a reply to a reply, but I want to reiterate it here, because its important that everybody understands this... "It boils down to this: If you love Destiny, and you want to see the franchise continue, then you have to love the scrubs, the filthy casuals, the kinderguardians, etc... This culture of elitism is only going to kill the game faster. I would rather have 9 million guardians at 300+ (deserving or not) than have 1 million guardians at 315+ and 8 million playing other games. There are many ways in Destiny to prove that you're a top-tier badass. Light level shouldn't be one of them. If we have to hold the hands of the less-talented players and lobby for better and more frequent rewards to increase the longevity of the game, then so be it."

  • There are Two current ways to hit max light level. If you really want to avoid the raid, do the following: Beat the Exotic Sword quest to get a 310 Heavy. Get Blue armor high enough to raise your light level to 301 or higher. Farm exotic engrams. After you hit 301 or more, the exotics you decrypt have a chance of being 310. Infuse 310 exotics into your normal gear. OR. Join a couple of groups on Destiny. Advertise you're doing a fresh raid, ask for experienced players. Beat the raid in under 2 hours. Have a helluva fun time doing it. The raid is actually some really fun content that a lot of people avoid for some very poor reasons. It doesn't take nearly as long to find a group as some people care to admit, and the raid itself is very enjoyable if you have a team that can do the mechanics properly, or, if they can't do that, then just be enjoyable. Some of the most fun I've had is when it took 10+ hours to beat the raid over a span of days, just cause the people I played with were just so enjoyable to be around. TL,DR; There's a path to hit the max light level. If you want to purposefully avoid it, prepare for an intense grind.

    • All Bungie ever needed to do was add a matchmaking choice to raids and they would get the casuals in as well. No more harping on about only 20% of players ever raid....newsflash Bungie, thats because there is no matchmaking option! More and more people will hit 295 and get bored as they can't get into raids and advance. They will just leave eventually as I am doing.

      • Nightfall drops might help with this now. But I think giving engrams a chance to decrypt at 300, if you're not 300 yet, would be another way to help.

      • Finally made it to 300+. Haven't even finished the raid! Played up to war priest but got no drops but shards. Realized each character had a different 300 piece of armor. So I stole from my Hunter and titan even though it was he only legendary of that type each had. But got my warlock to 300. First exotic engram was 310 to get my sniper up for when I do raid. It's possible. But takes a lot of luck I think.

I raid a bit, but I would agree with much of what you say. Mostly because the raid is also not rewarding much of the time. About exotic engrams: If you're <300 they should decode to 300 If you're 300-310 they should decode to 310 If you're 310-320 they should decode to 320 Every. Single. Time. It sucks to be 305 and get a 290 exotic. This would fix a great many frustrations.

The anticipation makes it fun. It also doesn't make it so you get full raid gear set quickly which in return makes you play it more. I also like how the gear can have different perks other than the base ones (more agility while torn, more armour with relic ect.) because this also makes you want to play until you receive the drop you want. I also agree with you that some other way should be implemented to receive max light gear because the whole reason bungie switches the light system was to get past this for the majority of kids who can't raid. This is where I disagree with you...regular crucible should not drop good gear because you can literally join a game and go make a sandwich, comeback and get the same gear someone completing something like the raid had to earn. IB gear was low (too low in my opinion) but for just that reason. IB didn't require much skill set because you can stack 5 medallions and turn them in and repeat to get level 5 to just buy the gear. In my opinion the gear should have been 300 but as you can tell playing with a light level more than 10 difference had a big impact. Trials should only have max light gear for those who make it to the lighthouse in my opinion because that is on the same basis of skill as hard raids but the gear Vance sells should be only 300. I guess what I'm trying to get at is the gear players who can't raid or go to the lighthouse obtain should be higher than they are (300 and 310 when level cap rises with hard raid) but the highest light gear (320) should have to be earned through raid or lighthouse because those show that the player is good enough to earn it. The 10 light really wouldn't give any major disadvantages because players beat the raid at 280 and played IB at 280-300 and still did fine compared to the higher light levels. Higher light may mean more damage output and more defense, but it doesn't dictate skill level

        • I play this for at least 2-3 hours a day and have not done a the raid yet so I'm stuck at 295 light. I refuse to have to use a 3rd party app to find a dang raid group. How about making the city more than a mall for dailies and Id items add a dang board to sign up for a raid it does say social on it lol. I'm happy just running strikes patrols and some pvp just for the marks as I'm not the best. What I'd like to see is instead of getting 5 motes for every level up past 40 give me a item the will add 1 point to a weapon or piece of armor. Would be slow for getting levels but heck any progress is better then just getting more stuff to dismantle and shove into my bank.

          • Bump. Fully agree with a lot of what's being said here. I raid every week and I am getting gear slowly but damn the grind from 300-310 is bad. Especially when half the drops I get from the raid are only 300.

          • DestinyLfg takes 3-7 minutes to find a group , Raid only takes 45min to a hour ...that's as long as you have 1or2 people who have done it before

          • Love this. I don't have the time to spend raiding. Pretty much only completed Crota cause bits were cheesed. I have a couple of hours one evening a week. The rest of the time it's an hour here and there. I don't mind not being able to raid, I chose to buy the game knowing that I probably wouldn't able to raid much. But at least keep us all on a fairly competitive level!

          • Totally agree. Love the game and have since beta, but i am a filthy casual with not a lot of time to play raids, they are really hard for me to do. I do try my best to get them done, i find most lfg is elitist bulls××t and my friends are all getting raids done and i struggle to be on at the time to complete them. This raid i got as far as the priest and thats it. If there is no chance of getting over 300 soon i will re-shelve destiny again. Back to COD ;)

          • Yeh I agree, after all the promises they made about incremental progress always being made, its back to the same wall you hit we had last year. I like iron banner but everything in it is essentially a vanity item. The whole event is a bit of a novelty when it should have been an awesome way to make your character more powerful. I just don't know how they keep getting it wrong.

            • Good stuff, fully agree. "But MMOs always emphasize raids for gear." Going with that argument, those MMOs typically have more than one raid option. Really odd that with the addition of TTK game content is so limited now.

              • I won't even touch hard mode because after a month with TTK, it's no better than Vanilla. One option to get above 300 forces people into an activity that frankly sucks. The raid is terrible. The inclusion of stupid jumping puzzles in an FPS is lazy game design. Someone just had a hardon for Mario. Those puzzles alone, I've seen raid teams fall apart. The one in VOG was easy to pass...some in King's Fall are absurd. The first one with the ships as a Warlock? Shudder. MMO's give everyone options to get up to at least mid tier level gear without ever having to touch a raid. Destiny will die if they continue on this path. Catering to elitists is a recipe for disaster. And I've done the raid every week...now I'm done. It's awful. Look at Wildstar for evidence.

Just the same bs as before , if you cant do the raid or dont want to you just have to wait untill the next dlc is coming then they will make it easier to get max lightlevel. In my case most friends left the game, so the raid looks cool on you tube ,but thats as close as it gets for me. If you dont have a ton of exp and a high lightlevel its hard to find a group of players that want you to help. Got kicked many times on my lack of exp in this raid, just dont really care annymore at this point. Most players just want to do this as quick as possible.

i just wish they'd stop ignoring how bad the raid's RNG is... i mean you have to grind big time and hope the RNG smiles on you just to get into the freaking thing, then you have to wade through a sea of stupid elitests 12 years olds looking for a carry and people who refuse to listen to anyone and never learn the fights screwing everyone else over and what is your reward for this difficult, annoying, pain staking process... about 15 + / - "shards" that are basically a "thanks for playing try again next time" and a class item (bond, mark, or cloak) if your really lucky... that is pure BS.... its hard enough to get the gear to get into the raid, but once you get there you get screwed over and can't get anything anyway....

                  • It's kind of shitty when its already super god damn hard to get to 310 and then they are going to raise the bar to 330 which will be even harder to get to. Leaving the best raiders with more then ample time destroying everyone in Trails and IB because nobody else can get anywhere close. Kind of shitty.
